- High-mileage oil at 150,000 miles: what it does

# An engine at 150,000 miles: what high-mileage oil can and cannot do

High-mileage oils add seal conditioners and extra additives meant to slow small leaks and oil consumption in older engines, and many brands aim them at vehicles over 75,000 miles. They do not repair worn parts, so the bay checks for leaks and levels first and tells you what it sees.

★★★★★ 4.7 stars from 952 Google reviews

A lot of the vehicles that come through our bays are well past the odometer number that used to mean retirement. Crissy H. wrote that her 2000 4Runner only goes to the Longley service center for oil changes and smog testing (Google review), and trucks with 200,000 miles on the clock are ordinary in Northern Nevada. If yours just rolled past 150,000, here is what high-mileage oil is actually for.

## What changes inside an older engine

Engines do not wear out all at once. Rubber seals and gaskets harden with years of heat cycles, piston rings and valve guides wear a little, and the gaps that hold oil in get slightly bigger. Out here the heat cycles are real: Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 nights at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), so a 15-year-old engine has been through thousands of big swings.

The symptoms are small at first. A spot on the driveway. A dipstick a little lower than it used to be at the next change. A faint burning smell after a long climb. None of those mean the engine is done.

## What the oil does

[High-mileage oil](https://xpressoilandlube.com/services/oil-change/high-mileage/) typically adds seal conditioners that help older seals stay pliable, plus extra detergents and anti-wear additives. Many brands market it for vehicles over 75,000 miles, but the label is a suggestion, not a rule. The grade still has to match your owner's manual, and the American Petroleum Institute's guidance to use the manufacturer's viscosity and service category still applies (API).

What it cannot do is rebuild anything. If a rear main seal is leaking steadily, or the engine is burning a quart every thousand miles, no oil fixes that, and we will tell you plainly that it is a repair-shop job, not a bay job.

- Can help: minor seepage, slight oil consumption, older seals
- Cannot fix: steady leaks, worn rings, failed gaskets
- Still required: the grade and spec in your manual

## What we look at on a high-mileage visit

The [maintenance check](https://xpressoilandlube.com/services/maintenance-check/) matters more on an older car. With the vehicle over the bay, the technician looks underneath for fresh oil on the pan, the filter area and the transmission. Up top, they check the level on the dipstick before draining, which tells you how much the engine used since the last visit. They look at the belts, the coolant level and the transmission fluid color, because at 150,000 miles those age too.

Then you hear what was found, in plain words, and you decide. If the oil was a quart low, that is worth knowing. If everything was dry, that is worth knowing too.

## Keeping a long-lived engine on schedule

The interval is still the manufacturer's. AAA's guidance is that the owner's manual sets it (AAA), and for an older engine under severe service (towing, dust, short winter trips) the shorter schedule is often the right one. Between changes, pull the dipstick every few fill-ups; the [how to check your oil guide](https://xpressoilandlube.com/guides/how-to-check-your-oil/) shows the routine.

If your car just crossed 150,000, bring it to any of our four service centers. No appointment is needed, and the check will tell you whether high-mileage oil is the right next step.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Is high-mileage oil required at 150,000 miles?

No. It is an option. The requirement is the grade and specification in your owner's manual.

### Can I go back to regular oil later?

Yes, as long as it meets the manual's specification. Oils that meet the same spec are compatible.

### My engine burns oil. Will high-mileage oil stop it?

It may slow minor consumption. Heavy consumption usually points to worn parts, and that is a repair-shop diagnosis.
