- The windshield sticker math, done right

# Oil change sticker math: where that number comes from

The next-due number on your sticker starts with the interval in your owner's manual, then gets shortened if you drive the way the manufacturer calls severe service. Many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles, the owner's manual sets the number, and time counts even when miles do not add up.

★★★★★ 4.7 stars from 952 Google reviews

Eugene P. left a five-star review of our Mae Anne Avenue service center with one wish: a return date and mileage reminder sticker on the windshield would have been perfect (Google review). Fair point, and the sticker is standard. But a lot of people look at the number on it and wonder where it came from. It is not a sales figure and it is not a tradition. It is a short calculation, and once you see it you can check it yourself.

## Start with the manual, not a slogan

The old rule of every 3,000 miles comes from an era of conventional oil and carbureted engines. It is not the rule for a modern car. AAA puts it plainly: many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles or more between changes, and the owner's manual sets the number. Toyota, for example, lists 10,000 miles or 12 months on 0W-20 under normal conditions and 5,000 miles under special operating conditions.

So the first thing the technician does in the bay is look at your oil cap and, when needed, the manual. That gives the grade and the normal interval. That is the starting figure.

## Then ask whether you drive severe

Every manual has two schedules, normal and severe, and most people assume they are on the normal one. Read the severe list and you may change your mind. Short trips where the engine never fully warms up. Stop-and-go traffic. Towing or hauling. Dusty or gravel roads. Mountain grades. Extreme heat or cold.

Northern Nevada checks several of those boxes without trying. Reno sits around 4,500 feet. The airport averages 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 nights at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), with only about 7.4 inches of rain a year to keep the dust down. A Mount Rose Highway commute or a boat trailer to Pyramid Lake counts as severe. If that is you, the sticker number comes down toward the severe figure in your manual.

- Normal schedule: the manual's longer interval, usually on synthetic
- Severe schedule: the manual's shorter interval, often about half
- The technician writes the one that matches how you told us you drive

## Months count as much as miles

The second number on the sticker is a date, and it matters for the second car in the household. Washoe County households average 1.96 vehicles (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and the second one often sits. Oil picks up moisture and acids whether or not the odometer moves, which is why manuals pair a mileage figure with a month figure and say whichever comes first.

A pickup that only tows the camper in summer, a convertible that hides from the snow, the teenager's car that goes to school and back: those all hit the month limit before the mile limit. The date on the sticker is not a suggestion. Our [miles versus months guide](https://xpressoilandlube.com/guides/miles-vs-months-oil-change/) goes deeper.

## Checking the math yourself

Take the mileage on your ticket. Add the interval from your manual, normal or severe. Compare it to the sticker. If they match, good. If the sticker is lower, ask the technician why; usually it is because you told us you tow, commute over the pass or drive dirt roads, and we wrote the severe figure. If you want the normal figure instead, that is your call and we will note it.

If you would rather not do arithmetic, the [What's Due](https://xpressoilandlube.com/whats-due/) tool on this site does it from your mileage and driving, and the [email club](https://xpressoilandlube.com/join/) sends a reminder as the date or the miles come up. Either way, when the sticker says it is time, the bay at the nearest service center is open and nobody needs an appointment.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Is every 3,000 miles still right for anyone?

Only if your manual says so, which is rare on a modern engine. Older engines on conventional oil run shorter intervals; the manual, not the sticker tradition, decides.

### Does full synthetic always mean a longer interval?

Usually the manual's longer interval assumes synthetic, and some manufacturers require it. Switching to synthetic does not change the manual's severe-service figure, though.

### What if I lost the manual?

Tell the technician the year, make and model. The grade is on the oil cap, and the interval is published by every manufacturer; our [vehicle pages](https://xpressoilandlube.com/vehicles/) list the common ones.

### Can the service center reset the oil-life monitor?

Yes. Resetting the oil-change light is part of the full-service oil change at all four service centers.
