# Before the Thanksgiving drive: a car check for the holiday roads

Thanksgiving trips from Northern Nevada often cross a mountain pass on early-winter roads, so check the oil change due date, tires, battery, wipers, washer fluid, lights and coolant a week before you leave. Our service centers check those during a full-service oil change, Monday to Saturday, no appointment.

Thanksgiving week from Reno usually means one of three drives: west over Donner Summit on I-80 to Sacramento and the Bay Area, south on US-395 along the Eastern Sierra, or east on I-80 across the Great Basin. All three can see snow, chain controls or long stretches without services in late November. Here is how to get the car ready without turning the holiday week into an errand week.

## Start a week out

The best time for a pre-trip check is the week before, not the day before. If the check turns up something that needs a part or a repair shop, a week gives you time. Our service centers are closed Sundays, and holiday-week hours can differ, so call your service center before planning around Thanksgiving week itself.

If the oil change is due within the trip's miles, do it now. A long highway drive is easy on oil, but towing, mountain grades and a full car count as severe service in many manuals.

## The list for holiday roads

The [road trip checklist](https://xpressoilandlube.com/checklists/before-a-road-trip/) covers everything. For late November, these come first.

- Battery tested: Reno averages about 19 freezing nights in November (NOAA 1991-2020 normals)
- Coolant with freeze protection checked, not just the level
- Wipers that clear in one pass and a full reservoir of freeze-rated washer fluid
- Every bulb working, since the drive home is often in the dark
- Tire pressure set cold to the door sticker, with a look at tread
- Engine air filter checked if the trip crosses the desert east

## Route notes

For I-80 west, Caltrans posts chain controls over Donner Summit on its QuickMap site, and they can change fast in a storm. Carry chains if your vehicle requires them and know how to fit them. For US-395 south through Gardnerville and beyond, services thin out in the Eastern Sierra, so leave with a full tank. For I-80 east, the distances between towns are long; a weak battery or a slow coolant leak matters more out there.

Whatever the route, leave room in the schedule. Holiday traffic and weather are the two things no pre-trip check can fix.

Pack for the car as well as the people: a phone charger, a blanket, water, snacks, an ice scraper, gloves and a flashlight. If you get held at a chain control or a closure, a warm car with a full tank and a good battery turns a long wait into an inconvenience instead of a problem.

## Which service center is on your way out

Reno Northwest on Mae Anne Avenue is near the I-80 west on-ramps. Reno South on Longley Lane is close to I-580 and the airport. Carson City on College Parkway and Gardnerville on US-395 sit right on the way south. Josh B. wrote that the Carson City service center takes care of his Toyota Tacoma and his Ram 3500 and gets the job done (Google review), which is the kind of mixed driveway that heads out together for the holidays.

Bring every car that is making the trip. No appointment needed at any of the four service centers.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Are you open on Thanksgiving?

Holiday hours can differ. Call your service center before planning around Thanksgiving Day or the day after.

### Should I change to winter wiper blades?

If you will see snow, a blade that clears in one pass matters more than the type. Winter blades resist ice buildup.

### What if my oil change is due halfway through the trip?

Do it before you leave. It is easier to start the trip with fresh oil and a new sticker than to find a service center in an unfamiliar town over a holiday weekend.

### Do you check the spare tire?

Ask when you pull in. We set tire pressure on the four road tires during every oil change.
