Coolant ages by the calendar, and the trailer truck, the weekend car or the camper parked beside the house is aging its coolant whether it moves or not. ## Time, not miles, is what runs out AAA lists conventional green IAT coolant at about two years or 24,000 miles and the long-life OAT and HOAT types at about five years or 50,000 miles, some makers allowing up to ten years or 150,000. Notice the years. A vehicle that covers 3,000 miles a year will hit the time limit long before the mileage, and the corrosion inhibitors in the coolant wear out on the same schedule either way. So the household with three vehicles usually has one that is overdue and nobody noticed. Bring them in together; a freeze-point reading on each takes a minute. ## I-80 along the river, and what it asks of a radiator Mogul sits on the I-80 corridor where the Truckee River leaves the canyon. Head west and the interstate starts its long climb toward Donner Summit; head east and you are in Reno, where the airport station averages 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). A truck towing a boat or a camper up that grade on an August afternoon is the textbook severe-service case: high load, high outside temperature, thin air at altitude. Winter is the other side. The same station records about 122 freezing nights a year.
