# What an A/C recharge costs, and why a leak check comes first

Kelley Blue Book's service pricing lists a professional A/C recharge at $264 to $310, and RepairPal's estimator lists $285 to $369 with labor at $179 to $262 and refrigerant and parts around $106. A system that is low on refrigerant has a leak somewhere, which is why every reputable recharge starts with a pressure and leak check rather than a can.

Reno averages 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and the first of them is when people discover the air conditioning blows warm. The published figures for a recharge are gathered below with their sources and dates. They cluster more tightly than most services, with one big exception, the refrigerant type, explained in its own section. Our price is quoted when you pull in after the technician has checked the system pressures.

## What the public figures say

| Item | Published figure | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional A/C recharge (KBB Service Advisor pricing, article dated November 4, 2025; leak checks usually included.) | $264 to $310 | [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/ac-recharge-what-is-it/) | 2026-10-15 |

| Do-it-yourself recharge kit (Same article; KBB warns that adding refrigerant to a leaking system only delays the repair.) | $80 to $130 | [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/car-advice/ac-recharge-what-is-it/) | 2026-10-15 |
| Car A/C repair, all causes (For comparison; repair of a leak or component, not a recharge alone.) | $384 to $445 average | [Kelley Blue Book](https://www.kbb.com/service-repair-guide/car-ac-repair-costs) | 2026-10-15 |

## What the published figures say

Kelley Blue Book's A/C recharge article, dated November 2025, says a professional recharge carries a price tag of $264 to $310 from its Service Advisor pricing tool and that leak checks are usually included, and lists do-it-yourself kits at $80 to $130. RepairPal's estimator reports $285 to $369 for an A/C recharge, with labor at $179 to $262 and parts around $106. Synchrony's December 2025 article, citing RepairPal, lists $250 to $350. For comparison, KBB's broader A/C repair guide puts the average cost of car A/C repair at $384 to $445, which is what a leak or a failed part costs on top of the refrigerant.

The figures agree within a fairly narrow band for a straightforward recharge on an R-134a system. The band moves up sharply on a newer vehicle, for the reason in the next section.

## R-134a versus R-1234yf

Vehicles built from the mid-1990s through roughly the mid-2010s use R-134a refrigerant, which is inexpensive and widely stocked. Newer vehicles use R-1234yf, adopted for its lower global-warming potential, which costs several times more per pound and requires its own recovery and charging equipment. A recharge on an R-1234yf vehicle therefore costs more than the same job on an older car, and some shops do not service it at all. Tell the technician your model year when you ask about A/C, or look for the label under the hood that names the refrigerant and the charge weight; the [A/C recharge guide](https://xpressoilandlube.com/guides/ac-recharge-what-to-know/) shows where to find it.

## Why the leak check is not optional

An automotive A/C system is sealed. It does not use up refrigerant the way an engine uses oil. If it is low, refrigerant has left through a leak, and the only question is how fast. KBB's advice is direct: adding refrigerant to a leaking system only pushes the problem down the road. A proper service therefore starts by measuring the pressures and looking for the leak with dye or an electronic sniffer, then recovers any remaining refrigerant with a machine, pulls a vacuum to boil off moisture, and charges by weight to the label.

A small leak at a valve core or an O-ring is a minor fix. A leak at the condenser, which sits in front of the radiator and takes every rock on I-80, or at the evaporator inside the dash, or at the compressor, is a repair. Our [A/C service](https://xpressoilandlube.com/services/ac-service/) covers the inspection, pressure check and recharge; component repair we refer out, and we tell you what we found so the repair shop starts with the answer. See [A/C blowing warm](https://xpressoilandlube.com/problems/ac-blowing-warm/) for the usual causes.

## Timing and the quote

The hot season here runs June through September, with July averaging about 26 days at 90 F or above (NOAA normals for the Reno airport), and every service center in town is busiest in the first week of it. An A/C check in May, when the system is run for the first time, finds a weak system before the heat does. When you pull in, the technician checks the vent temperature and the system pressures, tells you whether the charge is low and whether a leak is visible, and gives you the written price for the service before any refrigerant is added. Done while you wait at any of the four service centers.

## What moves the price

- Refrigerant type: R-134a on most vehicles before about 2015 versus R-1234yf on newer ones, which costs several times more per pound
- System capacity: a large SUV with rear air holds far more refrigerant than a compact
- What the leak check finds: a Schrader valve or O-ring is minor; a condenser, evaporator or compressor is a repair
- Whether a dye or electronic leak test is included
- Service center type and labor rate
- Season: service centers are busiest in the first hot week of the year

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### How often does A/C need a recharge?

On a healthy system, never on a schedule; it is sealed. If it needs one, something is leaking, and the leak check tells you how urgent it is.

### Can I use a DIY can?

KBB lists kits at $80 to $130 and warns against them for a leaking system. Overcharging is as common as undercharging with a can, and a can cannot pull a vacuum or remove moisture.

### Does the recharge include the leak repair?

No. The recharge covers inspection, recovery, vacuum and charge. A leaking part is a separate repair, shown to you and referred out if it is beyond a bay service.
