The median age is 46 and the commute is 20.4 minutes. This is the neighborhood of the Tahoe season pass, the ski rack and the SUV that goes up Mount Rose twenty weekends a winter. It is also five minutes from our bay, which makes the before-the-mountain check the easiest errand on the list. ## Before Mount Rose The Mount Rose Highway climbs from the valley floor to the highest year-round pass in the Sierra, and a vehicle that does it every Saturday in January sees altitude, grade, cold and chain-control idling in a single morning. Owner's manuals put all four under severe service. AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic go 5,000 to 7,500 miles with the manual setting the number, and for a Mount Rose regular the manual's shorter interval is the right one. From the Meadowood and Peckham Lane neighborhoods, Peckham east to Longley and south. From the Summit, Veterans Parkway or I-580 north to South McCarran. Hours at Longley are Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday. ## Smog checks for 89511 vehicles South Reno is inside the Washoe County emissions testing area. A gasoline vehicle registered here needs a [smog check](https://xpressoilandlube.com/services/smog-check/) every year beginning with its fourth registration; a hybrid is exempt for its first five model years and a pass is valid 90 days (Nevada DMV emission program page, read 10/15/26). The result goes to the DMV electronically and online renewal opens about 35 days before expiry. A newer vehicle inside its first three registrations is exempt, and plenty of South Reno driveways hold one.
