# Battery Check for High-Mileage Vehicles

On a high-mileage car, a battery check matters twice: the battery itself may be old, and the alternator charging it has many miles on it too, so our test at participating locations measures cranking capacity and reads the charging voltage. The Car Care Council suggests testing any battery past three years old and before every winter; Reno averages about 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).

Older cars collect small electrical problems: a corroded terminal, a frayed ground strap, an aftermarket stereo wired in a decade ago, a belt that slips just a little. Each one can make a healthy battery look bad or slowly drain a good one. The test we do is quick to read but tells you a lot about where the car stands before the cold mornings start.

## What the check covers

The tester measures the battery's available cranking power against the cold cranking amp rating on its label. With the engine running, the technician reads the system voltage to see whether the alternator is keeping up. Terminals, cable ends and the hold-down are looked at, and the serpentine belt that drives the alternator is checked as part of the under-hood visual.

- Cranking capacity
- Charging voltage at idle
- Terminals and cable ends
- Drive belt condition
- Battery date code noted

## Reading the result on an older car

A battery that tests weak but charges normally is usually just old. A good battery with a low charging reading points toward the charging system, which we do not repair but can describe. Corrosion at the terminals can cause hard starts on its own. You get the numbers, our plain read of them, and the decision is yours.

## When to test

The Car Care Council's rule of three years and every fall applies to every car; on a high-mileage car you may not know how old the battery is. The date code on the case tells us. Before winter is the time: Carson City averages about 146 freezing nights a year, Minden about 188 (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and older engines with worn parts can be harder to crank.

## At the service center

The test is part of the oil-change maintenance check at participating locations, no appointment needed. Stay with the car in the bay; the technician will show you the reading. Pair it with a [high-mileage oil change](https://xpressoilandlube.com/services/oil-change/high-mileage/) and a look at the wipers and bulbs, and the car is set for the dark winter mornings.

## A car that sits

Many high-mileage cars become the second car, the weekend truck or the one that waits in the driveway while the owner is out of town. A battery that sits for weeks discharges on its own, and the small draws from a clock, a radio memory or an alarm add to that. If your older car spends long stretches parked, a battery maintainer or a regular drive helps, and a fall test tells you whether the battery has already lost too much capacity to recover.

### What a customer said

Reno South My wife went in to buy a new battery for her car and they encouraged her to go to the dealer to get the warranty. When she checked and there was no warranty, they tested her battery and did not charge her even though she would have bought a new battery. Lastly, they fixed the XM radio for her for free. Although these were simple things, a lot of shops would have taken advantage of my wife's lack of knowledge of cars and charged her for these. This is a sign of honesty to me.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### How do I know how old my battery is?

Most batteries have a date code on the case or a sticker. The technician can read it for you.

### Can you tell if my alternator is bad?

We read the charging voltage and tell you whether it looks normal. We do not repair alternators.

### Is the test at every Xpress service center?

It is offered at participating locations. Ask at the counter.
