# Cabin Air Filter for Pickup Trucks

Most late-model pickups carry a cabin air filter behind the glove box, and we check and replace it on request during an oil-change visit at all four Xpress Oil & Lube service centers, no appointment needed. The Car Care Council puts the usual interval at about 12,000 to 15,000 miles or once a year, and a truck that lives on gravel roads or job sites often needs it sooner.

A pickup breathes a lot of outside air. The fan runs on high in July, the windows are down on the ranch road, and the crew cab carries three or four people who all share whatever the filter lets through. That pleated paper element is the only thing between the cowl vent and everyone's lungs, and on a work truck in Northern Nevada it tends to come out grey, packed with dirt and sometimes a few pine needles or a mouse nest. Here is what is different about the truck version of this small job.

## Where the filter sits in a pickup

On most current full-size pickups the filter housing is behind the glove box on the passenger side; the box drops down on its stops and a small cover slides out. A few older trucks hide it under the hood at the base of the windshield, under the plastic cowl panel, and some older work trucks were built with no cabin filter at all. The technician confirms which layout your truck has before quoting anything.

Crew cabs and extended cabs do not get a bigger filter in most cases, which is the point: the same element serves a bigger cabin and more passengers, so it loads up faster in heavy use.

## When a truck filter is due

Start with the owner's manual. Many truck manuals list a normal interval and a shorter one for dusty or unpaved conditions, and a truck that sees a construction site, a ranch road or the dirt shoulders around Lemmon Valley belongs on the shorter one. The Car Care Council's general guidance is about 12,000 to 15,000 miles or yearly. In practice, if the fan sounds louder than the air it moves, or the windshield fogs and will not clear, the filter is a good first suspect.

- Dust on the dash a day after cleaning it
- Weak airflow on the top fan speed
- A musty or dirty-sock smell when the A/C first kicks on
- Windows that fog up slowly in winter

## What happens in the bay

You pull into the bay and stay with the truck. During the maintenance check the technician can pull the filter on request and hold it up beside a new one so you can see the difference. If it is fine, it goes back in. If it is packed, you decide whether to replace it; nothing is added without your yes, which is also what Nevada's estimate law expects of any service center.

A charcoal-layer filter, where the truck accepts one, helps with odors such as diesel exhaust in traffic and smoke. We tell you whether your truck's housing takes that style.

## Why Northern Nevada trucks clog faster

The Reno-Tahoe airport averages only about 7.4 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), so the dust that a wetter climate would wash down stays in the air. Add the wildfire smoke that drifts in from the Sierra most summers and a truck filter can go from white to dark in one season. Trucks parked under trees in Verdi or Washoe Valley also collect needles and leaves at the cowl, which end up in the housing.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Does a work truck need a cabin filter more often than a car?

Often yes, because it sees more dust and runs the fan harder. The manual's dusty-conditions schedule is the right guide, and a look at the filter settles it.

### My older truck has no filter housing. Is that a problem?

Some older trucks were built without one. We will tell you if yours is one of them; there is nothing to replace in that case.

### Can you replace it while I get an oil change?

Yes. It is done in the same visit, on request, at all four service centers.

### Is the cabin filter the same as the engine air filter?

No. The engine filter cleans air going into the engine; the cabin filter cleans air coming through your vents. We check both.
