# Power Steering Flush for High-Mileage Vehicles

Most high-mileage vehicles use hydraulic power steering, and fluid that has never been changed is often dark, gritty and hard on the pump and seals. We show you the fluid, flush it with the specified type when it is worn, and tell you plainly if the noise or leak you are dealing with is mechanical.

★★★★★ 4.7 stars from 952 Google reviews

Hydraulic power steering was standard on most vehicles until electric systems spread through the 2010s, so if your car or truck has a lot of miles, it very likely has a pump, a reservoir and fluid that has worked for a long time. Of all the fluids under the hood, this is one that owners most often forget exists.

## What old steering fluid looks like

Over many years, heat breaks the fluid down and the inner lining of the hoses sheds fine rubber into it. That debris circulates through the pump and the rack seals. Fresh fluid of the right type slows that wear.

| Fluid condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Clear amber or red | Healthy |
| Brown, mild smell | Worn; flush recommended |
| Black, burnt smell | Overheated; flush and watch for pump noise |
| Foamy | Air in the system, often a low level or a leak |

## Symptoms owners notice

Reno averages 122 freezing nights a year and Minden 188 (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Old fluid thickens more than fresh in the cold, which is why many of these complaints start in November.

- A whine when turning, loudest at full lock or on a cold morning
- Heavier steering in parking lots
- A groan when the engine first starts in winter
- A reservoir that keeps needing a top-off

## When a flush helps and when it does not

Most manufacturers publish no fixed power steering interval and ask for inspection at regular service, and the Car Care Council's guidance is to change fluid that has darkened. On a high-mileage vehicle that has never had it done, a flush with the correct fluid often quiets the system. It will not repair a worn pump, a leaking rack or a glazed serpentine belt. If the reservoir is low with fluid on the ground, or the whine continues after fresh fluid, we tell you to see a repair shop. Nevada's garage law (NRS 487.6875) requires a written estimate for repairs over fifty dollars; we quote the flush the same way, before anything is drained.

## How we handle an older system

If the wheel on your older car groans on cold mornings, drive in and let us look before winter sets in.

- Check the level and condition and show you the fluid.
- Look for seepage at the pump, hoses and rack boots.
- Flush with the fluid specified for your make if you approve it.
- Bleed air by cycling the steering, recheck the level, and note the mileage.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Can flushing old fluid cause a leak?

Fresh fluid does not cause leaks. A system that was already seeping may show it more clearly; we look first.

### What fluid does my older car take?

The manual or reservoir cap names it. Older vehicles may use ATF or a dedicated fluid.

### Is a power steering whine dangerous?

It is a warning, and usually not an urgent one. Have the fluid and belt checked soon.

### My older truck has never had the steering fluid changed. Should I start now?

If the fluid is dark, yes. Fresh fluid of the right type reduces wear on the pump and seals from here on, and it costs far less than either part. If the fluid still looks clean, we tell you that and check it again at the next oil change.
