# Transmission Fluid Service for High-Mileage Vehicles

A high-mileage transmission with an unknown service history is usually best served by a drain-and-fill with the specified fluid rather than an aggressive full exchange, and a sample tells us a lot before any work starts. If the fluid suggests a mechanical problem, we say so and point you to a transmission shop instead of selling a service that will not help.

There is an old line in parking lots that you should never change the fluid in a transmission that has never had it changed. Like most folk wisdom it has a grain of truth wrapped in a lot of guesswork. Here is the more useful version: look at the fluid first, choose the gentler method when the history is unknown, and be honest about what fresh fluid can and cannot do.

## Start with the sample

The technician pulls fluid from the dipstick or fill plug and brings it to your window. Red and mild-smelling means it has life left. Brown means it is worn. Black, burnt-smelling or gritty means the transmission has been running hot or shedding material. Our [fluid color guide](https://xpressoilandlube.com/guides/transmission-fluid-color-guide/) has photos of each stage. The sample decides the next step, not the mileage alone.

## Drain-and-fill versus exchange on an older unit

A drain-and-fill replaces the fluid that comes out of the pan, often a third to a half of the total, and is the gentler choice when nobody knows what the transmission has been through. Repeating it over a couple of oil-change visits brings the fluid close to fresh without a sudden change in friction properties. A full exchange replaces nearly all of it in one visit and is a fine choice on a transmission with a known, regular history. We explain which we recommend and why; you choose.

| Situation | Usual first step |
|---|---|
| Unknown history, fluid brown | Drain-and-fill, repeat later |
| Regular records, fluid due | Exchange or drain-and-fill per the maker |
| Burnt or gritty fluid | No service sold; see a transmission shop |

## The schedule still applies

Most manufacturers list a transmission fluid interval somewhere in the 30,000 to 60,000 mile range under severe service and longer under normal use, and some list the fluid as filled for life. The Car Care Council's guidance is to inspect transmission fluid at regular intervals and follow the owner's manual. A vehicle at 160,000 miles has usually passed several of those intervals, and the question is whether they were done. Your old receipts, or a [My Garage](https://xpressoilandlube.com/garage/) record, answer that faster than anything we can see.

## Local driving that has added up

Twenty years of Reno summers, with about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and twenty years of climbing I-580 out of Washoe Valley add a lot of heat cycles to a transmission. That does not make an old car fragile. It makes the fluid worth checking. Drive in with the car you depend on and we will tell you plainly what the sample shows.

### What a customer said

Carson City I am glad I chose to take my care here. The mechanic changed my oil, transmission fluid, and air filter for me in no time at all. And I was very thankful that he stayed later than they are open just to service my car.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### Will changing old fluid make my transmission slip?

A transmission that slips after fresh fluid was usually already worn. That is why we sample first and recommend the gentler method when the history is unknown.

### How many drain-and-fills does it take?

Often two or three over successive visits to get most of the old fluid out. We track it on the invoice.

### Do you rebuild transmissions?

No. We service fluid. If the sample suggests internal wear, we tell you so.
