Kingsbury Grade trips to Lake Tahoe and the valley's hot summers and hard freezes are what usually move a Minden vehicle onto the severe-service schedule. ★★★★★ 4.8 stars from 85 Google reviews Minden has the shortest commute in our area, a mean of 14.9 minutes (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and the steepest weekend drive. Kingsbury Grade, NV-207, climbs from the valley floor to Daggett Pass at about 7,339 feet before dropping to Stateline, more than 2,500 feet above our service center at 4,785 feet (USGS 3DEP). A short-commute car that does Kingsbury every weekend lives two very different lives. ## Kingsbury Grade and the transmission The climb holds an automatic in lower gears under load for several miles, and the descent works it again as the transmission helps the brakes on the switchbacks. In winter the top of the grade is far colder than the valley. Toyota names severe weather and towing as reasons to change transmission fluid sooner, and for most makers the severe-service column lands between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. If your car does the grade regularly, that column is worth reading. ## The valley's climate The Minden weather station records about 68 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter and 188 nights at or below freezing, 75 of them at 20 degrees or colder (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Heat ages transmission fluid; cold makes it thick, so first shifts on a January morning are slow. Few places put a transmission through both extremes the way the Carson Valley does. ## Short hop south From Esmeralda Avenue or Buckeye Road, get onto US-395 south; the service center is on the right at 1293 US Hwy 395 N, just past the Minden line on the north side of Gardnerville. College Parkway in Carson City is about 24 minutes north if you work there. ## The service - We check the level and draw a sample to show you. - We look up your model's interval, normal and severe. - You get a written recommendation and decide. - Fresh fluid by drain-and-fill or full exchange, as the manufacturer permits; CVT fluid for CVTs. - We set the level warm and record the fluid and mileage. ## Hours Gardnerville is open Monday through Friday 9 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 3, closed Sunday; (775) 301-5912. We do not rebuild transmissions, so if the fluid suggests internal wear, we say so plainly. ### Sources - [data.census.gov/](https://data.census.gov/) (Census ACS 5-year 2024: Minden CDP mean commute; read 10/15/26) - [project-osrm.org/](https://project-osrm.org/) (OSRM free-flow routing from the Minden centroid to each service center, 10/15/26) - [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sierra_Nevada_road_passes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sierra_Nevada_road_passes) (Sierra passes: Donner Summit on I-80, Daggett Pass on Kingsbury Grade at about 7,339 ft, Spooner Summit; read 10/15/26) - [usgs.gov/3d-elevation-program](https://www.usgs.gov/3d-elevation-program) (USGS 3DEP service center elevations: Mae Anne 4,917 ft, Longley 4,426 ft, College Parkway 4,683 ft, US 395 4,785 ft; read 10/15/26) - [ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/us-climate-normals](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/land-based-station/us-climate-normals) (NOAA 1991-2020 normals, Minden station: about 68 days at 90 F or hotter, 188 freezing nights, 75 nights at 20 F or colder; read 10/15/26) - [toyota.com/car-tips/change-transmission-fluid/](https://www.toyota.com/car-tips/change-transmission-fluid/) (Toyota: shorter transmission fluid intervals for towing, severe weather and stop-and-go driving; read 10/15/26) ### Closest service center: Gardnerville - Call [(775) 301-5912](tel:+17753015912) Mon-Fri 9 am-5 pm, Sat 9 am-3 pm, Sun closed - Address [1293 US Hwy 395 N, Gardnerville, NV 89410](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=1293+US+Hwy+395+N%2C+Gardnerville%2C+NV+89410&destination_place_id=ChIJYQ-Okii_mYARfT-NCEgyvAM) [Directions](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=1293+US+Hwy+395+N%2C+Gardnerville%2C+NV+89410&destination_place_id=ChIJYQ-Okii_mYARfT-NCEgyvAM) ### The drive About 8 minutes (2.9 miles) to the Gardnerville service center by car in light traffic, OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), retrieved 10/15/26.
