# Mercedes-Benz Oil Changes and the A and B Service Rhythm

Mercedes-Benz USA puts the first oil service at approximately 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, and the dashboard then alternates between Service A and Service B. Both include new oil and a new filter; B adds a cabin filter and a brake fluid exchange, and the oil itself has to carry the Mercedes approval sheet your owner's manual names.

★★★★★ 4.7 stars from 952 Google reviews

A Mercedes tells you what it wants. The instrument cluster counts down to the next service and labels it A or B, and the label is the clue to what else is due beyond the oil. Around Reno that means C-Class sedans in Somersett driveways, GLC and GLE crossovers on the weekend Tahoe run, and Sprinter vans working delivery routes through south Reno and Sparks. This page lays out what Mercedes-Benz USA publishes on its own service page, how the approval-sheet system for oil works, and the parts of Northern Nevada driving that make the countdown worth respecting.

## At a glance

- First Service A at about 10,000 miles or 1 year, per the Mercedes-Benz USA service page
- Service B follows about 20,000 miles or 1 year after the previous service
- Oil must carry the MB approval sheet in your manual, such as 229.5 or 229.71
- Service B adds the cabin dust filter and a brake fluid exchange
- Drive in at any of our four service centers, no appointment

## What A and B actually mean

The Mercedes-Benz USA service and maintenance page describes Service A as the first visit at approximately 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. It lists motor oil replacement, oil filter replacement, fluid level checks, a tire inflation check, a brake component inspection and a reset of the maintenance counter. Service B arrives approximately 20,000 miles or one year after the previous service and repeats all of that, then adds a cabin dust or combination filter and a brake fluid exchange.

In practice the two take turns. A car that saw Service A last spring will usually show B next, and the cluster says so before it is due. An oil and filter change at our service center covers the engine half of either visit; the brake fluid exchange is the one item on the B list we leave for a full repair shop or the dealer, and we will tell you plainly when the countdown shows B.

## Why the oil has a sheet number

Mercedes does not stop at a viscosity like 0W-20 or 5W-30. It tests and approves individual oils against numbered specification sheets and publishes the approved list on its own operating-fluids site. Your owner's manual names the sheet for your engine; on many recent gasoline four- and six-cylinder engines that is 229.71, and on a lot of slightly older gasoline cars it is 229.5 or 229.51. Diesels such as the BlueTEC models and Sprinter vans list their own sheets.

A bottle that says the right viscosity but not the right sheet is the wrong oil for a Mercedes. We read the manual or the label on the engine cover, match the sheet, and note it on your receipt so the next service center knows what went in.

- Check the owner's manual or the cover label for the MB sheet number
- Match viscosity and sheet, not one or the other
- Fill to the capacity Mercedes lists, then confirm the level on the dash or dipstick

## The Reno miles that count double

A Mercedes Flexible Service System estimates the due date from how the car is driven, so Northern Nevada habits show up on the countdown. Short winter trips are the big one: the Reno airport logs about 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), and an E-Class that runs three miles to a downtown office in January never lets its oil get fully hot. Summer is the opposite problem, with about 65 days a year at 90 F or warmer and long climbs up the Mount Rose Highway or Spooner Summit with the A/C on.

Dust is the third. The high desert around Reno and the Carson Valley gets little rain, and a GLE that parks at a trailhead off a dirt road pulls that dust through its engine air filter and its cabin filter. The cabin filter is a Service B item for a reason, and in wildfire smoke season we sometimes find one gray well before the B reminder appears. We show it to you and you decide.

## A Mercedes in our bay

- Pull into the bay at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway in Carson City or US 395 in Gardnerville. No appointment, service while you wait.
- We read the oil sheet, drain the engine, fit a new filter and refill with an oil that carries that approval.
- The multi-point maintenance check looks at the engine air filter, the cabin filter on request, coolant, brake fluid level, tire pressure, lights and wipers.
- We reset the service counter where the car allows it and tell you what the next letter will be.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

### How often does a Mercedes-Benz need an oil change?

Mercedes-Benz USA lists the first service at approximately 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first, and the following services about every 20,000 miles or one to two years as A and B alternate. The countdown in your cluster sets the exact date for your car.

### Is any synthetic oil fine for a Mercedes?

No. The oil has to carry the Mercedes approval sheet your manual names, such as 229.71 or 229.5, as well as the right viscosity. We match both.

### Can you do a Service B?

We handle the oil, filter, fluid checks, tire pressure and cabin filter. The brake fluid exchange on the B list is not something we do, so we tell you it is due and you choose where it gets done.

### Do you work on Sprinter vans?

Yes, Sprinters are welcome at all four service centers. Diesel Sprinters list their own oil sheet, and the [work vans](https://xpressoilandlube.com/vehicles/work-vans/) page covers fleet records and routes.
