# Toyota Venza Oil Change: The 0W-16 Hybrid and the Older 0W-20 Venza

The 2021 to 2024 Venza is a hybrid that takes SAE 0W-16, about 4.5 quarts with the filter, per Toyota's 2024 Venza Owner's Manual. Toyota's 2024 Venza maintenance guide sets the oil and filter at 10,000 miles or 12 months, and at 5,000 miles or six months when the car is driven mainly on dirt or dusty roads.

Two very different cars wear the Venza badge. The first one, sold through 2015, was a tall wagon with a 2.7-liter four or a 3.5-liter V6 and a regular automatic. The second, sold from 2021 to 2024, is a hybrid only, with a 2.5-liter engine, electric motors front and rear, and all-wheel drive on every trim. They do not share an oil grade, a capacity or a parts list, so the first thing we do when a Venza rolls into the bay is look at the year and the cap.

## Which Venza is in your driveway

Toyota's 2024 Venza Owner's Manual calls SAE 0W-16 the best choice for fuel economy and cold starts, and allows 0W-20 only as a stand-in that should be swapped back to 0W-16 at the next change. The hybrid also lists Toyota Genuine ATF WS for its hybrid transmission, about 4.1 quarts, and Toyota Super Long Life Coolant.

The first-generation manual on Toyota's site lists SAE 0W-20 for both engines, with 5W-20 as the temporary fallback. Some early V6 Venzas left the factory with a different grade printed on the cap. When the cap and the book disagree, we show you both and follow the cap.

## How the hybrid changes the service

The hybrid system shuts the engine off at stoplights and on light throttle, so the engine runs fewer hours per mile than a gas-only car. Toyota still writes a fixed oil interval for it, 10,000 miles or 12 months, and the 12 months matters most for the Venza that mostly runs errands around Somersett and Caughlin Ranch. Short trips leave moisture in the oil, and the calendar catches that even when the odometer does not.

The other hybrid item is easy to miss. Toyota's guide has the HV battery cooling intake filter inspected every 5,000 miles and cleaned every 20,000. The intake pulls cabin air across the battery, so pet hair, dust and the fine ash from a smoky August all end up there. A clogged intake makes the battery run warmer.

## Tahoe trips, smoke season and the cabin filter

A lot of Venzas here split their week between town and the lake, which means the Mount Rose Highway in both directions and a long engine-braking descent coming home. That is fine for the hybrid, which recovers energy on the way down, but it is exactly the dusty, hilly use that Toyota's special operating conditions column was written for. If your Venza parks at a cabin on a dirt drive, the 5,000-mile column is the one in your own book.

## Coolant, transmission fluid and the rest of the list

Toyota's 2024 guide puts the first engine and inverter coolant replacement at 100,000 miles or 120 months, then every 50,000 miles or 60 months. Freezing nights in Reno run about 122 a year on the NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals, so we test coolant strength as part of every visit rather than waiting for the mileage.

### Can I use 0W-20 in a 2021 to 2024 Venza?

Only as a stand-in. Toyota's 2024 Venza Owner's Manual allows 0W-20 when 0W-16 is not available and says to go back to 0W-16 at the next change.

### How often does the hybrid Venza need an oil change?

Every 10,000 miles or 12 months on Toyota's 2024 guide, or every 5,000 miles or six months if it is driven mainly on dirt or dusty roads.

### Does my older Venza V6 take the same oil?

No. The first-generation manual lists SAE 0W-20 and about 6.4 quarts with the filter for the 3.5-liter V6. We read the cap before we pour.

### Does a hybrid Venza need a smog check?

The Nevada DMV exempts hybrids for their first five model years. After that, a Venza registered in the Washoe testing area is tested at renewal, and our two Reno service centers do the test. Carson City and Douglas County registrations are not tested.

### Do I need an appointment?
