A/C service for Somersett drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 10 minutes

From Somersett it is about 10 minutes and 4.1 miles downhill to our Mae Anne Avenue service center, where we test the A/C pressures and vent temperature and recharge only if the system is low. A leak or a dead compressor is a job for an A/C repair shop, and we will say so before anything is charged.

Reno Northwest, the lot

Somersett homes sit on the hills above the Truckee River, above our service center at 4,917 feet (USGS 3DEP), and the drive down Somersett Parkway to Mae Anne is one of the shortest trips to an A/C check in Reno: OSRM puts it at about 10 minutes. The climb back up is where a weak system shows itself. Air conditioning pulls power from the engine, and on a grade in a 94 F July afternoon (the Reno airport's average July high, NOAA 1991-2020) a marginal compressor gives up first.

A hot-afternoon test drive you already take

If the vents feel fine on the flat but warm up halfway up Somersett Parkway, that is useful information, so tell the technician. Low refrigerant, a slipping clutch or a condenser that cannot shed heat all get worse under load and at idle. The Reno airport station averages 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 6 at 100 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), so the hill gets that test dozens of times every summer.

The service, step by step

  1. Pull into the bay; no appointment.
  2. Tell us the year and model so we know whether the system takes R-134a or R-1234yf (the underhood label confirms it).
  3. Gauges go on the service ports and the engine runs with the A/C on maximum.
  4. We read both pressures and the center-vent temperature and look at the belt, compressor clutch, condenser and fittings.
  5. If the system is low and holding, we recharge to the weight on the label and re-check the vent.
  6. If the numbers point to a leak or a failed part, you get the readings and a plain recommendation for an A/C repair shop.

Why we will not just top it off

Recharging a leaking system feels like a fix for a week or two, then the cold fades again. We would rather tell you the truth on the first visit. Many Somersett vehicles are newer models on R-1234yf, a refrigerant the EPA approved as a lower global-warming option; it uses its own service equipment, and we fill it to the exact charge weight because both overfilling and underfilling hurt cooling. The refrigerant guide has more on the two types.

Hours and the rest of the visit

The Mae Anne service center is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday, phone (775) 787-1000. Somersett has no Census geography of its own; the surrounding 89523 ZIP averages a 21.9-minute commute (ACS 5-year 2024), and most of it is on I-80 or McCarran in the afternoon sun. If the oil sticker is close, ask for the oil change at the same time and make the trip down the hill once.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Went in for an oil change. Whole process took less than 20 minutes. Kind of hard to find, but other than that this place was great!

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

My A/C works on the flat but not on the hill. Why?

Load. The compressor works harder on a climb and the engine sheds more heat into the condenser, so a slightly low or weak system shows up there first. That is exactly what the pressure check is for.

Is R-1234yf service different?

It uses different fittings and its own machine. We charge it to the label weight like any other system.

Will a recharge stop a musty smell?

No. A musty smell usually comes from the evaporator and the cabin filter. See the musty A/C guide; we can check the cabin filter while you are here.
