A Nevada smog check is the annual emissions inspection the DMV requires before registration renewal for most gasoline vehicles 1968 and newer and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR registered in the urban parts of Washoe and Clark counties. Our Reno service centers on Mae Anne Avenue and Longley Lane test while you wait and send the result to the DMV electronically.
Smog check near me is searched more often in Washoe County than oil change near me, and most of the people typing it just want to know three things: do I need one, where do I go, and what happens after I pass. The Nevada DMV's Emission Control Program sets every rule on this page, and we cite it for each one. The short version is that if your car is registered at a Reno, Sparks or Washoe Valley address, you need a passing test every year once the vehicle is past its first three registrations, the test is good for 90 days, and once you pass here the DMV already has the result before you reach your car.
At a glance
Required yearly at renewal for vehicles registered in the Washoe County testing area (Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley) and the Clark County urban area
Not required for vehicles registered in Carson City, Douglas, Lyon or Storey counties
New vehicles exempt for the first three registrations; hybrids exempt for the first five model years
A passing test is valid for 90 days (180 after a Nevada dealer sale)
Results transmitted to the DMV electronically; renew online the same day

Who needs a smog check in Nevada
The Nevada DMV requires an emissions inspection only in the urban areas of two counties. In Washoe County that means Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley, most of the county west of Washoe Valley and everything south of the 40th parallel; Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth are named as exempt. In Clark County it is the valley hydrographic basin plus a five-mile buffer. Carson City, Douglas County, Lyon County and Storey County are not emissions areas, so a vehicle registered in Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Dayton, Mound House, Fernley or Virginia City never needs a smog check to renew.
Within the testing areas, the DMV tests gasoline vehicles model year 1968 and newer at any weight and diesel vehicles up to 14,000 pounds GVWR, every year at registration renewal. The test attaches to where the vehicle is registered, not where you live today, which is why a Carson City resident with a car still registered to a Sparks address will see the requirement on the renewal notice. Our Washoe versus Carson comparison lays the two sets of rules side by side.
Exemptions, per the DMV
Every item above comes from the DMV's Emission Control Program page and NRS 445B.798 through 445B.800. If your renewal notice says a test is required and you believe one of these applies, the DMV's Reno Emissions Lab answers those questions; we test what the notice asks for.
New vehicles: the first three registrations are exempt; testing begins with the fourth
Hybrids: exempt for the first five model years, tested from the sixth
Vehicles model year 1967 and older
Motorcycles and mopeds
Electric vehicles, and vehicles permanently converted to propane, CNG, methane or butane
Diesels over 14,000 pounds GVWR
Classic Vehicle, Classic Rod and Old Timer plates driven 5,000 miles a year or less, with classic insurance and the annual odometer affidavit (DMV form EC-018)
Some transfers, such as between spouses, and fleets in the DMV's Continuous Monitoring Program
What the test fee is
The Nevada DMV sets a yearly maximum inspection fee from a labor-rate survey, and each station sets its own price at or under that cap. For 2026 the DMV emission page lists a Washoe County maximum of $64.50 for a light-duty gasoline inspection plus a $7 DMV certificate fee, a maximum of $71.50 in total. The same DMV page lists maximums of $66 for a heavy-duty gasoline inspection and $67 for a diesel inspection in Washoe County, and allows a station that also processes registration renewal to add up to $10 for that service. Those are the state's ceilings, not our prices; ask the service center when you drive in, and check the coupons page before you come.
How the visit goes at the Reno service centers
Andrew P. wrote in a Google review of the Longley Lane service center that he has been coming there for smog checks for about ten years and that it is always fast. Megan L. wrote of the same service center that she went in for a smog and registration renewal and the service was quick and efficient. A passing test is valid for 90 days under NRS 445B.800, or 180 days after a Nevada dealer sale, so the test can be done well ahead of the renewal date; a vehicle becomes eligible for online renewal about 35 days before the registration expires, per the DMV's online renewal page.
Drive into the bay at Mae Anne Avenue or Longley Lane with your renewal notice or registration and the vehicle warmed up
The technician confirms the plate and VIN against the DMV record
The inspection runs: an OBD-II readiness and code scan on 1996 and newer vehicles, a tailpipe measurement on older ones, and a visual check of emissions components
A passing result is transmitted to the DMV electronically; you receive the printed report
Renew online, by mail or at a DMV kiosk within the 90-day window
If the vehicle does not pass
A failed test is a report, not a dead end. The printout names the reason: a stored trouble code, a readiness monitor that has not completed, or a tailpipe reading over the limit on older vehicles. A check engine light is an automatic fail on 1996 and newer vehicles, and monitors that have been reset by a recent battery disconnect need a drive cycle before they report ready. Our failed smog guide and the check engine light and smog guide explain what each outcome means and what the DMV's repair-waiver process involves.
We are a test station, not an emissions repair shop. If the vehicle fails, we tell you what the report says and what kind of service center can address it; under Nevada rules, repairs toward a waiver must be done at a station the DMV authorizes for emissions repair, and we will say plainly that is not us. Nevada's garage law (NRS 487.6875) applies here as everywhere: any work over fifty dollars gets a written estimate and your yes first.
Which service centers test
Smog checks are offered at Reno Northwest, 6100 Mae Anne Ave and Reno South, 4993 Longley Ln, Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday mornings. Vehicles registered in Carson City or Douglas County do not need a test, and a Reno-registered vehicle is best brought to a Reno service center. Both Reno service centers also do an oil change in the same visit, which is the combination most of our smog customers come for. Before you drive in, run through the pre-test checklist: warm engine, no check engine light, and the renewal notice in the glovebox.

I have a problem with a company telling me I should give them a 5 star rating. That being said, I take all of our vehicles for oil changes and smog tests. I have always been treated well by the staff and the have done their job well. I have a collector car that I have taken to much more expensive locations and ended up with greasy fingerprints on my hood. Here they take very good care of my vehicles.

Do I need a smog check in Carson City or Gardnerville?
Not for a vehicle registered there. Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties are not emissions areas under the Nevada DMV program. If the vehicle is registered to a Reno or Sparks address, it does, and our Reno service centers can test it.
How long is a smog check good for?
A passing test is valid for 90 days under NRS 445B.800, or 180 days when the vehicle is sold by a Nevada dealer.
Is my new car exempt?
The first three registrations of a new vehicle are exempt; the test starts with the fourth. Hybrids are exempt for their first five model years.
Does the DMV get the result automatically?
Yes. The DMV states that test results are transmitted electronically, and the vehicle becomes eligible for online renewal once a passing result is on file.
Will a check engine light fail me?
On 1996 and newer vehicles, yes. Have the cause looked at before testing; the light itself is a fail regardless of what triggered it.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Drive into the bay at either Reno service center during open hours; the test is done while you wait.
No appointment needed at any of the four service centers. Questions first? Send the form and the service center you pick answers during business hours.
