Why batteries quit in the fall, and what to do in October

Summer heat wears batteries down, and the first freezing mornings of fall expose the damage, because a cold engine needs more cranking power from a battery that has less to give. Reno goes from about 5 freezing nights in October to 19 in November (NOAA), so October is the month to test.

Ask anyone who works a bay in Northern Nevada and they will tell you dead-battery mornings come in a wave. It is not the dead of winter. It is the first stretch of cold in late October and November, when cars that started fine all summer suddenly click. The reason is a mix of chemistry and calendar.

The summer does the damage

Heat speeds up the chemical reactions inside a lead-acid battery, including the ones that wear it out. Water in the electrolyte evaporates, plates corrode faster, and capacity slowly drops. Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter, and Minden about 68 (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Under the hood, next to a hot engine, the battery sees even more.

None of that shows up in July. A weakened battery still has plenty of power to start a warm engine on a hot day.

The cold sends the bill

Cold flips both sides of the equation. A cold battery delivers less current, and a cold engine with thicker oil takes more effort to turn over. The NOAA normals for the Reno airport show the turn clearly.

  • September: no nights at or below freezing on average
  • October: about 5 freezing nights
  • November: about 19
  • December: about 27
  • Carson City averages 146 freezing nights a year and Minden 188, so the Carson Valley turns colder sooner

What a test tells you

A battery check measures how much cranking power the battery can still deliver compared with its rating, along with the state of charge. It answers the question you care about: will it start on a 20-degree morning? The Car Care Council recommends testing a battery once it is three years old and before every winter in a cold climate (Car Care Council).

A battery that tests weak in October gives you choices. One that fails in a parking lot in December does not.

The test also catches the cases that are not the battery's fault. A charging system that is not keeping up, a parasitic draw that drains the battery overnight, or loose and corroded cables all look like a bad battery from the driver's seat. If the result points that way, we will tell you so, and you can take it to a repair shop knowing what to ask.

Small things that help

Clean terminals matter; white or green corrosion adds resistance. Short trips do not give the alternator time to recharge, so a car used only for quick errands can run low. If a car sits for weeks, a battery maintainer is worth having. The cold-weather battery guide goes deeper.

Bring the car to any of our four service centers in October for a fall check: battery, coolant freeze protection, wipers and lights, all part of a full-service oil change. No appointment needed.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How long do car batteries last here?

It varies by battery and use. The Car Care Council suggests testing from year three and before every winter.

Are the Carson Valley mornings really colder than Reno's?

Yes. NOAA normals show Minden averaging 188 nights a year at or below freezing and 75 at 20 F or colder, compared with Reno's 122 and 25. That makes the Gardnerville service center's fall battery checks start a little earlier.

My car started fine all summer. Can the battery still be weak?

Yes. Heat damage often shows up only when it turns cold.

Do you replace batteries?

Ask your service center. The test is offered at participating locations, and the result tells you whether replacement is worth considering.
