The first freeze: what to check this week

When the first freezing night is in the forecast, test any battery older than three years, replace summer washer fluid with a freeze-rated mix and confirm the coolant protects well below freezing. Then set the tire pressure on a cold morning and keep a scraper in the car.

  1. Test the battery

A battery that cranks slowly on a cool September morning is the one that fails on the first freezing one. Testing is the only way to know.

  2. Swap summer washer fluid

Summer blend can freeze in the reservoir and the lines. Run the reservoir low first, then fill with a freeze-rated fluid.

  3. Read the coolant protection

Water added over the summer dilutes the mix. A reading shows how much protection remains.

  4. Lift or check the wipers

Blades frozen to the glass tear when you run them. Free them with the defroster first.

  5. Set tire pressure after a cold night

Pressure drops as the air cools, so many low-tire lights come on the first frosty morning. Set it to the door-jamb number.

  6. Put the scraper back in the car

It usually spends the summer in the garage.

  7. Check that the defroster blows hard

Weak airflow can mean a clogged cabin filter, which also slows defrosting.

  8. Look at every bulb

The days are getting shorter, and more driving happens in the dark.

  9. Let the engine run briefly before driving off

A short idle lets oil reach everything; long idling wastes fuel. Gentle driving warms the car best.

  10. Plug in a block heater if your diesel has one

Diesel owners in the Carson Valley often start using them now.

Reno's airport averages about 5 nights at or below freezing in October and about 19 in November (NOAA 1991-2020). Minden, in the Carson Valley, averages about 188 freezing nights a year, so the Gardnerville area gets its first frost earlier than Reno does. The first freeze is different from the coldest one. It is the night when every part that was barely coping in September gets tested at once.

Why the first night is the worst

Fall days in the valleys are still warm, so nobody thinks about winter until the windshield is white one morning. That night does three things together: it slows the battery's chemistry, it thickens the oil the starter has to push through, and it freezes any water sitting where it should not be. The car that starts fine at 45 F may not at 25 F.

The Carson Valley gets there first. With 75 nights a year at 20 F or below in Minden against 25 at the Reno airport (NOAA 1991-2020), drivers around Gardnerville, Minden and the Ranchos have less margin and should test sooner.

What one visit covers

The multi-point check with every full-service oil change looks at the washer fluid, coolant level, lights, wipers and tire pressure. A battery check is available at participating locations, and if the coolant reads weak a coolant flush restores the mix your manufacturer specifies. New wiper blades go on in the bay.

The Gardnerville service center opens at 9 on weekdays; the Reno and Carson City service centers open at 8. No appointment is needed.

Then think about the rest of winter

The first freeze is the warm-up. The before-winter checklist covers snow, the passes and the trunk kit, and the slow crank page explains what usually causes hard starts.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

My tire light came on the first cold morning. Is something wrong?

Usually the pressure just dropped with the temperature. Set the tires to the door-jamb number and see if the light clears. If one tire keeps dropping, have it looked at by a tire shop.

How old is too old for a battery?

The Car Care Council suggests testing any battery past three years before winter. Age alone does not decide it; the test does.

Is it bad to pour hot water on a frozen windshield?

Yes. The temperature shock can crack the glass. Use the defroster and a scraper.
