New to Nevada: getting your car settled in Northern Nevada
Register the car with the Nevada DMV, which includes a VIN inspection for a vehicle coming from another state, and find out whether your county requires a smog check. Then adjust the maintenance to the high desert: colder nights, hotter summers, more dust and higher elevation than many places people move from.

- Read the DMV's new resident page first
The Nevada DMV lists what a new resident needs: a Nevada driver's license, Nevada insurance, and Nevada registration for each vehicle, within the time the page sets.
- Buy a Nevada insurance policy
Registration needs proof of a Nevada policy, so switch the coverage before the DMV visit.
- Get the VIN inspection
A vehicle last registered in another state needs a DMV VIN inspection before Nevada registration. The DMV page lists where it can be done.
- Find out if your address is in a testing area
Urban Washoe County, including Reno, Sparks and Washoe Valley, requires emissions testing, as does the Las Vegas Valley. Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties do not.
- Check the exemptions before you book a test
New vehicles are exempt for their first three registrations and hybrids for their first five model years (Nevada DMV). Ask the DMV how the count applies to a car that was registered elsewhere.
- If a test is needed, mind the 90-day window
A passing result is valid 90 days. A battery that was disconnected for the move clears the readiness monitors, so drive it a few days before the test.
- Reset your idea of severe service
Reno sits around 4,400 to 4,900 feet at our service centers (USGS), with dust, heat and cold. Most owner's manuals treat that mix as severe service, which shortens some intervals.
- Get a baseline service
If you cannot remember the last oil change before the move, start fresh with an oil change and a multi-point check so the next due date is real.
- Plan for the heat
Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020). Have the A/C and coolant looked at before the first summer.
- Plan for the cold
Reno averages 122 freezing nights a year, Carson City 146 and Minden 188 (NOAA 1991-2020). A battery from a mild coastal climate may not like its first January here.
- Expect filters to load faster
Reno gets about 7.4 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020). The dry air means more dust in the engine and cabin air filters.
- Save the car in My Garage
Our My Garage keeps your vehicles and their next due dates in one place, and the email club sends the reminders.
People arrive in Northern Nevada from the Bay Area, Southern California, the Pacific Northwest and well beyond, and the car comes along with habits set somewhere else. Some of the paperwork depends on where you settle: an address in Reno or Sparks puts the car in the Washoe County emissions program, while Carson City, Minden or Dayton do not. The maintenance side depends on the climate, and that is the same story across the region. Here is the order we would go in.

The paperwork, in the order the DMV wants it
Nevada handles a new resident's car in a fixed sequence: insurance, then any required inspections, then registration and plates. The DMV's new resident page sets the deadlines and lists the documents, and it is worth reading before you stand in line. The out-of-state title, your Nevada license or ID, the Nevada insurance card and the VIN inspection form are the core of it.
The smog question is the one that trips people up. It follows the registered address. A house in Spanish Springs or south Reno means an annual test once the car is past its exemptions; a house in north Carson City or the Gardnerville Ranchos means no test at all for a car registered there. Our before-your-smog-check list covers the details.
What changes for the car up here
Coming from sea level, the first thing people notice is the climate swing. A July day at the Reno airport averages a low near 60 F and a high near 94 F, and a January morning averages about 26 F before a high in the upper 40s (NOAA 1991-2020). That daily cycle, the dust, the elevation and the long climbs to the lake are the reasons we read the severe-service column in your manual with you.
None of it calls for a special oil. It calls for the grade your manufacturer lists, changed on the interval that fits how you drive here. Many modern engines on synthetic run 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes (AAA); the manual sets the number for yours.
Your first visit
Pull into whichever of our four service centers is closest: Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno, Longley Lane in south Reno, College Parkway in Carson City, or US-395 in Gardnerville. No appointment is needed. A full-service oil change with the maintenance check gives you a clean starting point, and the technician tells you what was found before anything else is done. Smog checks are at the two Reno service centers.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Do I need a smog check to register my car in Nevada?
Only if it will be registered in a testing area, which in Northern Nevada means urban Washoe County. Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey county registrations do not need one.
Where do I get the VIN inspection?
The Nevada DMV's new resident page lists the places that can do it, starting with DMV offices.
Is California smog paperwork accepted in Nevada?
No. If your Nevada registration needs a test, it has to be a Nevada emissions test.
Should I change my oil after the move?
If the move added a lot of miles or you are unsure when it was last done, yes. It also sets a fresh starting point for the Nevada climate.
