Test-only vs test-and-repair smog stations in Nevada

A test-only station, which Nevada DMV guidebooks call 1G, may inspect vehicles but may not repair or adjust emissions components. A test-and-repair station, called 2G, may inspect and repair, and the DMV requires waiver-related emissions repairs after a failed test to be done at a 2G station.

Verdict

For a car that is running well and simply due for its annual test, either kind of station gives the same result, sent to the DMV electronically. If the car fails and you may need a waiver later, have the emissions repair done at a test-and-repair station, as the DMV requires.

When Test-only station (1G) is the right call

  • Your car is running normally and the registration renewal needs a test
  • You want the oil change and the smog check in one stop
  • You are buying or selling and need a current result
  • You have no check engine light and no known emissions problem

When Test-and-repair station (2G) is the right call

  • The car failed its test and needs an emissions repair
  • You may apply for a DMV waiver, which depends on qualifying repairs at a 2G station
  • The check engine light is on and you want diagnosis and the retest in one place
  • A repair shop you already trust holds a 2G authorization

Nevada law defines two kinds of emissions station. NRS 445B.710 describes an authorized inspection station, approved by the DMV to inspect vehicles and their pollution-control devices. NRS 445B.720 describes an authorized station, approved to inspect and also to install, repair and adjust those devices. In everyday use they are test-only and test-and-repair, or 1G and 2G. For most drivers in Reno and Sparks, the only time the difference matters is after a failed test.

Why Nevada separates testing from repair

The split keeps the test independent of any repair bill. A station that only tests has no repair work to sell, and the statute is precise about what it may do: NRS 445B.785 bars a test-only station from repairing or adjusting emissions components, while still allowing routine maintenance such as oil changes, replacing oil, air and fuel filters, belts and hoses, and approved fuel-injection service. That list describes a drive-in oil change service center closely.

Test-and-repair stations exist for the other side of the job. When a car fails, someone has to find and fix the cause, and the DMV wants that work done by a station approved for it, especially if the owner later seeks a waiver.

The fee is capped either way

The DMV sets a yearly maximum for the inspection, and each station may charge less. For 2026 the Nevada DMV caps a light-duty gasoline inspection in Washoe County at $64.50, plus a $7 DMV fee (Nevada DMV fee schedule). Both kinds of station work under the same caps. Repairs at a 2G station are priced separately, like any garage work, with a written estimate under NRS 487.6875.

Where our Reno service centers fit

Our Mae Anne Avenue and Longley Lane service centers run the Nevada smog check and send the result to the DMV. We do oil changes and maintenance; we do not repair emissions components. If a car fails, we explain the report in plain language and you take it to a repair shop of your choice, then come back for the retest.

Carson City and Gardnerville drivers usually do not need a test at all, because vehicles registered in Carson City and Douglas County are outside the testing area (Nevada DMV).

Before you choose

If the check engine light is on, fix that first; a lit light will fail the test at any station. If the car is healthy, choose whichever station is convenient. The before-your-smog-check list covers the rest.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is a test-only station's result any different?

No. The test procedure and the electronic result sent to the DMV are the same at both kinds of station.

Can a test-only station fix a loose fuel cap?

Tightening a cap is not a repair, but replacing or adjusting emissions parts is outside what a 1G station may do. Ask the repair shop.

How do I find a 2G station?

The Nevada DMV's emission program pages include a station search showing each station's type.
