Coolant flush for Genoa drivers: Gardnerville US 395, 19 minutes

Genoa sits along Foothill Road at the base of the Carson Range, a few minutes from the bottom of Kingsbury Grade. For Genoa drivers, a trip to Stateline or the south shore of Lake Tahoe means one of the steepest sustained climbs in the region, and coming home means the same grade in reverse. It is a small, settled community, about 1,284 residents with a median age of 62.9, 2.41 vehicles per household and 90.3 percent of homes owning two or more (Census ACS 5-year 2024).

Climbing a long, steep grade is when an engine makes the most heat for the longest time, and on a hot day there is little temperature difference between the coolant and the outside air for the radiator to work with. The Minden weather station, across the valley, averages about 68 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Coolant at the correct mix, held under pressure by a good radiator cap, keeps the boiling point well above normal operating temperature. A diluted mix or a weak cap narrows that margin, and the temperature gauge is where you see it.

And the other half of the year

The same station averages 188 nights at or below freezing and about 75 at 20 F or colder (NOAA). Cars parked in Genoa driveways overnight need a freeze point well below that, and a refractometer test tells us where yours stands.

Getting to the service center

Take Foothill Road or Jacks Valley Road south and east to US-395, then south through Minden into Gardnerville; the service center is on the right at 1293 US Hwy 395 N, about a mile past the Les Schwab. Monday through Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 9 to 3, closed Sunday, (775) 301-5912. Genoa is in Douglas County, so no smog check is needed for a vehicle registered there. Coolant types and the service

AAA describes IAT, the older green coolant, at about two years or 24,000 miles; OAT, common on GM vehicles, at about five years or 50,000 miles; and HOAT, common on Ford and Chrysler vehicles, at about five years or 50,000, with some automakers rating it up to ten years or 150,000. Color is not a reliable way to tell them apart, so we go by the owner's manual.

In the bay, the technician tests the freeze point and the coolant's condition, checks the cap, hoses and reservoir, and tells you what was found. A flush happens only after you approve a written estimate, required in Nevada for work over fifty dollars by NRS 487.6875. The radiator and the block, where accessible, are drained, the specified coolant goes in at the correct mix, air is bled out and the heater is checked. Old coolant is recycled.
