RepairPal's Reno page puts an engine air filter replacement at $79 to $99 on average, and Jerry's June 2025 estimate says most drivers pay $73 to $142 installed. The filter itself is the cheap part, with basic paper filters at $10 to $25 according to Jerry, so most of the spread is the vehicle and the labor to reach the air box.
An engine air filter is one of the least expensive parts on a car and one of the easiest to check, which is exactly why we pull it and show it to you at every visit. What it costs to replace varies more than people expect, from a two-clip air box on a Honda Accord to a buried housing on a European turbo. Here are the published figures we read on October 15, 2026, each with its source, plus how often Northern Nevada dust makes the job come due.

The Reno numbers by model
RepairPal's air filter page for Reno gives an average of $79 to $99 and then shows how much the vehicle matters. On that page a Honda Accord runs $57 to $73, a Toyota Camry $66 to $89, a Ford F-150 $65 to $85 and a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 $117 to $137. The Silverado figure is a good reminder that a bigger engine is not always the issue; air box design and filter size are.
Jerry's published estimate, dated June 27, 2025, is a little wider at $73 to $142 installed, and it breaks out the part: $10 to $25 for a basic paper filter, $10 to $60 more for premium or high-flow versions, and $50 to $100 up front for a reusable oiled filter.
How often the cost comes around here
The interval is where Northern Nevada differs. The Reno airport records only 7.35 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), so road dust stays in the air for most of the year, and wildfire smoke in late summer adds fine ash. Gravel driveways in the North Valleys, Washoe Valley, Johnson Lane and the Gardnerville Ranchos load a filter faster still.
The Car Care Council recommends inspecting the air filter at every oil change, and most owner's manuals shorten the replacement interval for dusty conditions. In practice that means some vehicles here need a filter twice as often as the mileage printed for normal driving. A clogged filter does not usually hurt a modern fuel-injected engine much, but it costs some power on a grade like the Mount Rose Highway, and dust that gets past a torn one does real harm.
What happens in our bay
Engine air filters are stocked at all four service centers for the common vehicles we see, and the swap usually happens while the oil drains. The engine air filter service page explains what we look for, and the dusty roads guide shows how to read a filter by sight.
During the multi-point check the technician opens the air box and pulls the filter.

If it is due, we tell you the price for the right filter for your engine before replacing anything.
You say yes or no; a filter that still has life goes back in.
Doing it yourself
On many cars this is a fair driveway job: open the clips, lift out the old filter, note the direction, drop in the new one and close the box so it seals. Jerry's comparison table puts the do-it-yourself cost at $15 to $84 for the filter alone, depending on the vehicle. The two mistakes we see most are a box that is not fully latched and a filter seated on its edge, both of which let unfiltered air in.
Do not confuse it with the cabin air filter, which cleans the air you breathe rather than the air the engine burns. Our cabin vs engine filter comparison sorts them out, and the cabin filter cost page covers the other one.
What moves the price
Access: an air box with clips on top of the engine versus a housing under other parts
Filter type: basic paper, premium OEM-style, or reusable oiled
Dual air boxes on some V6 and V8 engines, which double the parts
Local labor rates, which Jerry says can add $10 to $40 in urban areas
How dusty your roads are, which sets how often you pay for it
Whether it is done during another visit, when the hood is already up

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Why does the Silverado cost more than the F-150 on RepairPal's Reno page?
RepairPal lists the Silverado 1500 at $117 to $137 against the F-150 at $65 to $85. Filter size and air box design, not engine size alone, drive the difference.
How often should I replace it in Reno?
Follow the manual's dusty-conditions interval if you drive gravel or smoky summers. Having it checked at every oil change, as the Car Care Council suggests, is the simplest way to know.
Is a reusable filter worth it?
It costs more up front and needs cleaning and re-oiling. For most daily drivers a paper filter in the manual's spec is the simple choice.
Can a dirty filter cause a failed smog check?
It is rarely the cause on a modern car, but we check it before a Reno smog test anyway because it is cheap to rule out.
