Oil change for Caughlin Ranch drivers, 10 minutes away at Reno South (Longley Lane)
Caughlin Ranch and the rest of 89519 are about 10 minutes and 5.6 miles from our Longley Lane service center by South McCarran (OSRM routing, 10/15/26). The full-service oil change, done with no appointment while you wait, covers the oil and filter, chassis lube, the reminder light and a multi-point check.
Caughlin Ranch is built on the slope of the Carson Range, and its streets climb and drop more than almost any other neighborhood in Reno. The garages up here hold a lot of newer vehicles whose manuals specify full synthetic oil, and a surprising number of them never get driven far enough to warm up. Both facts shape what we do when one of them rolls into the bay at 4993 Longley Ln.
Down McCarran to Longley Lane
From Caughlin Parkway or Mayberry, get on South McCarran and follow the loop south and east past Plumb Lane and Kietzke. Longley Lane crosses McCarran near the airport; turn south and the service center is at 4993 Longley Ln. OSRM free-flow routing calls it about 10 minutes and 5.6 miles. Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno is about 11 minutes the other way around McCarran, so the two Reno service centers are nearly a tie from here; Longley Lane closes an hour earlier on Saturdays, at 3.
Short, steep trips and cold mornings
The mean commute in 89519 is 19.7 minutes and 60.9 percent of workers drive alone, a low share for Reno (Census ACS 5-year 2024). That means many of the cars here do errands more than commutes, and errands from Caughlin Ranch are short and steep: a cold engine dropping down the hill, a warm one climbing back up. Short trips never fully boil the moisture out of the oil, and every manufacturer lists them as severe service. Add the Reno airport's 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), colder still at this elevation, and the first minute of each morning start is the hardest minute the engine sees all day.
The grades cut the other way in summer. Reno sees about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter (NOAA), and the climb up Caughlin Parkway with the A/C running is when oil temperature peaks. Heat is what breaks oil down, so the hill is working on your oil in both seasons.
Full synthetic and the interval that goes with it
Most late-model vehicles in Caughlin Ranch specify a full synthetic, often a 0W-20 or 5W-30, and we keep those grades in stock alongside synthetic blend, conventional, high-mileage and diesel. AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, with the owner's manual setting the exact number and severe service shortening it. For a Caughlin Ranch car that mostly does short hill trips, we point to the manual's severe figure; for one that also commutes the full McCarran loop daily, the normal figure may hold. We read the manual with you and write the sticker from it. Trips up the Mount Rose Highway to the lake count as mountain driving, which is severe service by every maker's definition.
What the full-service oil change includes
Up to 5 quarts of the grade your manual specifies, plus a new oil filter
Chassis lubrication where the manufacturer lists grease points
Oil-change reminder light reset
Engine air filter inspected and shown to you; cabin air filter on request, worth asking about in wildfire smoke season
Transmission, brake, power steering, radiator and washer fluids checked
Tire pressure, headlights, tail lights and wiper blades checked; battery test on request
We describe what we found in plain words and you make the call on anything beyond the oil change.
Hours and the smog check
Longley Lane is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday; the phone is (775) 828-6996. No appointment, and the car stays in the bay while we work. Caughlin Ranch is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, so a vehicle registered at an 89519 address needs an annual smog check from its fourth registration on, hybrids from their sixth model year, with a passing test valid for 90 days (Nevada DMV). We test at Longley Lane; see the Caughlin Ranch smog check page, and bring the registration renewal notice along so both get done today.
About 10 minutes (5.6 miles) to the Reno South service center by car in light traffic, OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM), retrieved 10/15/26. Not a promise of your drive time.
