89521 is the newest big neighborhood in Reno, 41,859 people with 2.09 vehicles per household (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and a lot of those vehicles are only a few years old. Newer cars come with oil-life monitors, long factory intervals and a lot of confusion about what the dash light actually means. That is the question this page answers, along with how short the drive to Longley Lane is.

What the oil-life monitor knows and what it does not

Most vehicles built in the last decade estimate oil life from engine revolutions, temperature and trip length rather than measuring the oil itself. The estimate is good, and it already accounts for short trips and cold starts, which is why the percentage drops faster in a Reno winter with its 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals) than it does on a summer road trip. What the monitor does not know is whether you towed the boat to Lahontan, ran the Mount Rose Highway in a snowstorm, or let the car sit for four months. The owner's manual covers those cases with a months limit and a severe-service schedule, and the manual outranks the light.

AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, with the owner's manual setting the number and severe service shortening it. We reset the monitor at every change, read the manual with you, and write the sticker from the book rather than from a guess.

Damonte Ranch driving

The mean commute from 89521 is 20.4 minutes and 66.4 percent of workers drive alone (Census ACS 2024), mostly up I-580 toward the airport, downtown or the industrial parks. Freeway miles are the kind oil likes. The errands around Damonte Ranch Parkway and the Summit are the kind it does not: short, with the engine never fully warm. The neighborhood also sits at the south end of the valley where the summer heat collects, and the airport station records about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter (NOAA). Our Longley Lane service center, at 4,426 feet (USGS 3DEP), is in the same air.

Nine minutes up I-580

Take Damonte Ranch Parkway or South Meadows Parkway to I-580, go north to the South McCarran exit, then east to Longley Lane; the service center is at 4993 Longley Ln on the east side of the airport. OSRM free-flow routing calls it about 9 minutes and 5 miles. Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno is about 23 minutes, so Longley Lane is the Damonte Ranch service center.

Hours, phone and the smog check for a newer car

Longley Lane is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday; call (775) 828-6996. No appointment is needed. Damonte Ranch is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, but a new vehicle is exempt from the smog check for its first three registrations, and a hybrid for its first five model years; after that the test is annual at renewal and a passing result is valid 90 days (Nevada DMV). When your car's turn comes, the Damonte Ranch smog check page explains it and Longley Lane does the test in the same bay as the oil change.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

My dash still says 40 percent oil life. Should I wait?

Usually the monitor is a fair guide for miles, but check the months limit in your manual; a car that sits or does only short trips can be due by date before the percentage runs out.

Is my three-year-old car due for a smog check?

Not until its fourth registration, and hybrids not until their sixth model year (Nevada DMV). After that it is annual.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Drive in Monday through Friday 8 to 5 or Saturday 8 to 3.

Do you have the 0W-20 my manual calls for?

Yes. We match the grade printed on your oil cap and in the manual.
