Reno Northwest, Mae Anne Avenue

The Mae Anne Avenue service center sits inside the neighborhood it serves. From Sharlands, Northgate, Sierra Highlands or the homes along Robb Drive you are on Mae Anne Avenue or McCarran Boulevard within a few turns, and OSRM free-flow routing puts the center of 89523 about 8 minutes and 2.6 miles from our door. That is close enough to fit an oil change between the grocery run and school pickup.

What Northwest Reno driving does to your oil

Northwest Reno is a commuter neighborhood: 37,130 people, 1.91 vehicles per household and a mean commute of 21.9 minutes, with 74.5 percent driving alone (Census ACS 5-year 2024). Most of those trips are short hops down McCarran or onto I-80, and short trips are the quiet enemy of engine oil. The engine never gets fully hot, so moisture and fuel that slip past the rings stay in the oil instead of boiling off, and the oil thins and sours sooner than the mileage suggests.

Then there is the altitude. Our Mae Anne Avenue service center sits at 4,917 feet (USGS 3DEP), and the neighborhood climbs toward Peavine from there. Thinner air means the engine works harder for the same speed on the Robb Drive grade, and the cold mornings, 122 nights a year at or below freezing at the Reno airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), mean a lot of cold starts on oil that has drained back to the pan overnight.

Add the dust. The high desert gives Reno only about 7.4 inches of precipitation a year (NOAA), so the air that reaches your engine air filter carries more grit than it would in a wetter climate. We hold the filter up to the light on every visit and show you what we see.

What the full-service oil change includes

  • Up to 5 quarts of the oil grade your manual calls for: conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic, high-mileage or diesel
  • A new oil filter and a chassis lubrication where the manufacturer specifies grease points
  • The oil-change reminder light reset so the dash is right when you leave
  • A multi-point check of the engine air filter, transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, radiator fluid, washer fluid, tire pressure, lights and wiper blades, plus a look under the hood and under the car
  • A battery test on request, and the cabin air filter, differential and transfer case fluids checked when you ask

Nothing is added without a yes. If the air filter is dirty or the coolant is low, we show you and you decide.

How often, and who says so

AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, and that the owner's manual sets the real number. Severe service shortens it, and the severe-service list reads like a Northwest Reno week: short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extreme heat and cold, dust and mountain grades. If you ski Mount Rose or run the Truckee River canyon to Tahoe on weekends, the shorter end of your manual's range is the honest choice.

Read your oil cap and your manual, or bring the car in and we will look it up. The sticker we put on the windshield follows the manual, not a one-size rule.

The bay, the hours and the smog check

There is no appointment and no waiting-room shuffle. Drive into the bay at 6100 Mae Anne Ave, tell us what the car has been doing, and the service happens while you wait. The service center is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday. Call (775) 787-1000 if you want to check the bay before you leave the house.

Northwest Reno is inside the Washoe County smog-check area, so a vehicle registered at an 89523 address needs an annual emissions test from its fourth registration on (Nevada DMV). The Mae Anne Avenue service center does smog checks, so the oil change and the test can happen in the same stop and the result goes to the DMV electronically.

What a customer said

Reno Northwest

Anthony was very helpful when I came in for an oil change. I always notice how employees interact with eachother and noticed that he was very respectful and patient with his coworkers who appeared to be in training. He was very polite to me and used my name on multiple occasions which I thought was nice. He thanked me for coming in and it was an overall great experience Anthony went above and beyond to do a great job. Thank you!
