A lot of that count is boats, trailers and the trucks that pull them to Pyramid Lake, and towing is the single clearest case of severe service in any owner's manual. Pulling a boat up the Pyramid Highway grade, or a travel trailer over Donner, loads the engine and transmission far harder than the same miles unloaded. Oil runs hotter, and heat is what breaks oil down. Every manufacturer puts towing on its severe-service schedule, usually alongside dusty roads and extreme temperatures, both of which Spanish Springs has. AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, that the owner's manual sets the number, and that severe service shortens it. The valley is also high and cold: the Reno airport logs 122 freezing nights a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and Spanish Springs, higher and more open, sees more. Cold starts on thick oil are where engine wear concentrates, and a full synthetic that flows at low temperature is what most newer trucks and SUVs specify.
Pyramid Highway south to I-80 west, I-580 south to the Mill Street exit, then Longley Lane south along the airport to 4993 Longley Ln. OSRM free-flow routing says about 24 minutes from Wingfield Springs and about 28 from the north end of the valley; Pyramid Highway traffic can add to that. Sparks Boulevard to Greg Street to Rock Boulevard is the surface alternative. Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno is about 27 minutes if you are headed that way instead.

Spanish Springs is inside the Washoe County emissions-testing area, so a vehicle registered there needs an annual smog check from its fourth registration on, with a passing test valid for 90 days (Nevada DMV).
