Why does my car smell like burning oil?

A burning oil smell almost always means oil is landing on something hot, usually the exhaust manifold, from a leaking valve cover, a spilled fill or a loose filter. It is rarely an emergency, but it is a leak, and leaks grow.

General guidance for this symptom. A warning light that is flashing or an overheating engine: stop driving and call.

Likely causes

  • A leaking valve cover gasket

The valve cover sits at the top of the engine, right above the exhaust manifold on many designs. The gasket hardens over years of 100 F afternoons and 20 F nights, oil seeps out, drips onto the manifold and smokes. The smell is the whole symptom for a long time. Gasket replacement is repair-shop work; we confirm the source and the oil level.

  • Oil spilled during the last fill

A quart poured in a hurry, a funnel missed, or an overfilled crankcase that pushed oil out the breather. It burns off over a few days. If the smell started right after a top-off, this is the first suspect. We wipe down the valve cover and look for the drip trail.

  • A loose oil filter or drain plug

A filter that was not seated or a plug with a reused crush washer weeps under pressure. The oil hits the crossmember and the exhaust pipe. It also empties the engine faster than any gasket, which is why we check the plug and filter seal first, every time, on every car in the bay.

  • Oil burning inside the engine

Worn valve seals or rings let oil into the combustion chamber. The smell comes out the tailpipe with blue smoke at start-up rather than from the hood. The oil level drops between changes. A high-mileage oil can slow the loss on an older engine; the mechanical fix is a repair shop's.

  • A leaking transmission or power steering line

Automatic transmission fluid and power steering fluid smell different from engine oil, sharper and sweeter, but people call both burning oil. We check the level and color of each fluid and can tell you which one is leaving.

    Power steering flush

The smell is distinct once you know it: heavy, acrid, a little like a campfire that has gone wrong, strongest after a climb up Geiger Grade or a long idle in the drive-through line. It shows up at the vents because the engine bay air gets pulled into the cabin. Oil that burns off a manifold does not hurt the engine today, but the oil that is leaving has to be replaced, and the leak that lets it out gets bigger with heat cycles. Here is where the oil usually comes from and what we do about the parts that are ours to do.

Smell at the hood or smell at the tailpipe?

Stand behind the car at a cold start. Blue-gray smoke from the exhaust for a few seconds means oil is getting past the valve seals overnight and burning in the cylinders. That is internal, and the fix is a repair shop's. No smoke at the tailpipe but a smell at the front of the car after it warms up means external, and external is what most people have: a gasket, a spill or a filter.

Look under the hood with a flashlight once the engine has cooled. Wet, dark streaks running down the side of the engine from the top are the valve cover. A clean engine with a wet filter is the filter. Oil on the front of the engine near the belts can be the front seal, and that one needs a repair shop too.

How we handle it in the bay

Every full-service oil change at our Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway and US 395 service centers includes a look under the hood and under the chassis. For a burning smell we go a step further: we find where the oil is wet, we check the level on the stick, and we check the drain plug and filter seal with the car on the lift. If the leak is a loose plug or filter, we fix it on the spot and top off the oil. If it is a gasket or a seal, we show you, write it on the invoice, and recommend a repair shop or your dealer.

What we will not do is tell you the engine is failing because you smelled oil. Most of these are small leaks on cars that have plenty of life left. The Car Care Council's guidance is to check the level monthly and watch for drips; a monthly check on a car with a known seep is all most owners need between changes.

Why it shows up more here

  • Heat: 65 days a year at 90 F or more at the Reno airport (NOAA 1991-2020) bake rubber gaskets until they shrink
  • Grades: the pull up US-50 to Spooner Summit or US-395 over the Washoe Valley rise runs the manifold hotter and burns off oil that drips harmlessly in town
  • Dust: the high desert coats the engine bay, and oily dust holds the smell longer than a clean engine would
  • Age: the average Northern Nevada household keeps about two vehicles (Washoe County 1.96 per household, Census ACS 2024), and the second car is usually the older one with the older gaskets

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

Is a burning oil smell dangerous?

Oil on a manifold smokes and smells long before it reaches a temperature where it would catch fire, but any fluid on an exhaust is worth fixing. If you see smoke rising from the hood while parked, shut it off and get it looked at before driving on.

Can I keep driving with a small leak?

Usually, as long as you check the dipstick weekly and keep the level between the marks. Carry a quart of the grade on your oil cap. Our oil-change interval reminder in the email club helps you keep track.

Will a high-mileage oil stop the leak?

High-mileage formulas carry seal conditioners that can slow a seep from an old gasket. They do not reseal a cracked valve cover or a bad filter. We will tell you which one you have.

Could it be the car in front of me?

Yes, on I-580 in traffic you can smell someone else's exhaust. If the smell follows you into a parking lot with the engine running and the windows up, it is yours.
