Why does my car smell sweet?
A sweet, syrupy smell around a car is ethylene glycol, the base of most antifreeze, and it means coolant is escaping somewhere and warming up. Outside the car it is usually a hose, clamp or radiator; inside the car with a foggy windshield it is usually the heater core.

General guidance for this symptom. A warning light that is flashing or an overheating engine: stop driving and call.
Likely causes
- A radiator or heater hose
Rubber hoses age from the inside out. A pinhole at a bend, or a clamp that has lost its tension after years of heat cycles, lets coolant seep onto the engine where it cooks and smells. We trace it with the engine cool, and a hose we can reach is often a repair-shop item that is quick for them.
Coolant flush and cooling system service - A plastic radiator end tank
Most radiators have plastic tanks crimped to an aluminum core. The plastic cracks at the seam after a decade of 100 F days and freezing nights. A white or colored crust along the seam is the tell. Radiator replacement is a repair shop's job; we confirm it and check the rest of the system.
Multi-point maintenance check - The heater core
A small radiator inside the dash. When it leaks, the smell is inside the cabin, the windshield fogs with an oily film, and the passenger floor mat may be damp. It is a long job for a repair shop. We confirm the coolant loss and the smell at the vents so you go in knowing.
Cabin air filter - The water pump or a reservoir cap
The pump has a weep hole that drips when the seal fails. A reservoir cap that no longer holds pressure lets coolant boil over on a hot climb and the smell comes from the overflow. The cap is the cheap one; we check it when we check the system.
Coolant flush and cooling system service
People describe it as maple syrup, candy or pancakes, and it shows up strongest right after you park a warm car. It is one of the few smells on this site that comes with a clear answer. Coolant is the only fluid under the hood that smells like that. The leak may be small, a drip a day that steams off the engine before it reaches the ground, or large enough to overheat the engine on the next grade. Either way the system is losing what it needs to protect an engine through a Reno July and a Minden January, so it is worth sorting this week.

Inside the car or outside?
Outside, strongest at the front after a drive: an engine-bay leak. Pop the hood when it has cooled and look for a crusty, colored trail on hoses, the radiator seams and the pump. Inside, strongest with the heater on, with a greasy film inside the windshield: the heater core. A dampness on the passenger side carpet settles it.
Either way, check the coolant reservoir on a cold engine. If it is below the low line, the leak is real and the system is already short. Top off with the manufacturer's coolant type, or water in a pinch, and drive in. Our coolant types guide explains why mixing types is a bad idea.
Antifreeze and pets
The sweet taste is the problem. Dogs and cats will lick a puddle of coolant, and ethylene glycol is poisonous to them in small amounts; the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center lists antifreeze among the most dangerous substances a pet can get into. If your car has dripped on the driveway, hose the spot down and keep animals off it until it is dry. That is a good reason to fix a small leak quickly even when the engine is running fine.
What we check and what we do
- Coolant level in the reservoir and the radiator, on a cold engine
- Coolant condition and type, and its freeze and boil protection
- Hoses, clamps, radiator seams, reservoir cap and the water pump weep hole, for crust and wet spots
- The smell at the vents with the heater on, to rule the heater core in or out
- Oil on the dipstick, to make sure coolant is not getting into the engine
If the system is sound and the loss was a cap or a loose clamp, a coolant flush with the correct type puts it right and protects the engine through the next winter. If the leak is a radiator, pump or heater core, we tell you where it is and send you to a repair shop. Hoses and radiators are not ours to replace, and we would rather say so than guess.
The Northern Nevada angle
Coolant does two jobs here that it does not have to do in milder places: keep an engine from boiling on a 100 F afternoon on I-80 near Fernley, and keep the block from freezing on a 0 F night in the Carson Valley (Minden averages two nights a year at or below 0 F, NOAA 1991-2020). A system that is leaking cannot be trusted at either end. Long-life coolant is rated by manufacturers for five years or more; if yours is older than that and you have a leak, a flush after the repair is the sensible reset.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Is it safe to drive with a sweet smell?
For a short trip with a full reservoir and a normal temperature gauge, yes. If the gauge moves or the level drops noticeably between checks, stop and get it looked at before a grade.
Can you replace a hose?
Hoses and clamps are repair-shop items. We find the leak, show you, and do the coolant flush once the system is tight.
Why is the windshield foggy and greasy?
That is the heater core. Coolant mist comes through the vents and coats the glass. A repair shop replaces the core; we confirm the symptom so you know what you are booking.
Can I use the stop-leak bottle from the parts store?
It can plug a pinhole and it can also plug the heater core and the radiator. We do not recommend it on a system you plan to keep. A repair and a flush is the clean route.
