Wipers streaking or chattering

Streaks come from a blade edge that is worn, torn or coated in road film, and chatter comes from rubber that has hardened in the sun or an arm that no longer holds the blade square to the glass. New blades fix most of it in a few minutes at any of our four service centers; a bent arm or a worn pivot is a repair shop's.

General guidance for this symptom. A warning light that is flashing or an overheating engine: stop driving and call.

Likely causes

  • A worn or torn blade edge

The wiping edge is a thin lip of rubber. Once it rounds over or splits, it skips water instead of lifting it. That is the streak. The Car Care Council suggests checking blades twice a year and replacing them when they streak; a year is a long life for a blade in this climate.

    Windshield wiper blades
  • Sun-hardened rubber

Dry, hot air and strong UV turn the rubber stiff. A stiff blade cannot flip over at the end of each stroke, so it drags and chatters across the glass. Blades on a car parked outdoors in Sparks all summer are the classic case.

    Windshield wiper blades
  • Road film and wax on the glass

Oily film from traffic, wax from a car wash, or the silicone from a glass treatment keeps a good blade from gripping. A washer fluid with a cleaner and a hand wash of the windshield with the blades lifted takes it off. We top off washer fluid at every service.

    Full-service oil change
  • A bent arm or weak arm spring

If a new blade still chatters in one spot, the arm is not holding the blade square to the glass or the spring has lost tension. An arm can be adjusted or replaced at a repair shop. We can tell you whether that is the problem before you buy a third set of blades.

    Multi-point maintenance check
  • The rear wiper or the winter blade

The rear blade is forgotten until the back window is a smear in a snowstorm. Winter blades with a rubber boot resist ice packing in the frame; on the Mount Rose Highway in January they are worth it. We carry both.

    Windshield wiper blades

Wipers are the cheapest safety part on the car and the one that fails most quietly. You do not notice until the first fall storm on I-80 near Verdi, with trucks throwing spray and the blades smearing it into a sheet. Northern Nevada is hard on rubber. The sun at 4,500 feet is strong, the air is dry, and a blade that sits baked on a windshield from June to October is often finished before it wipes a single snowflake. Here is how to read what your wipers are doing and what we replace.

What we do in the bay

Wiper blades are part of the multi-point check on every full-service oil change. We lift the arm, look at the edge, flex the rubber, and run the wipers with a splash of washer fluid. If they streak or chatter we show you, quote a set, and if you say yes they are on before the oil is drained. We size them from the manufacturer's spec for the car, since a blade an inch short leaves the wedge drivers complain about. We also fill the washer reservoir with a fluid rated for the cold; a summer fluid freezes solid on a 15 F morning in the Carson Valley.

Arms, pivots, the wiper motor and the washer pump are not ours. If a new blade does not cure a chatter, we say so and point you to a repair shop rather than sell another blade.

Why blades die fast here

  • About 7 inches of rain a year at the Reno airport (NOAA 1991-2020) means the blades sit dry and baking for months, then get asked to work hard in a few storms
  • Winter brings around 21 inches of snow at the airport and more at Mount Rose, and ice tears the edge off a blade used as a scraper
  • High-desert dust is fine grit, and every dry swipe sands the rubber
  • Strong UV at altitude hardens rubber faster than the same blade would see in the Bay Area

The habit that helps most costs nothing: lift the blades off the glass before a freeze, and never run the wipers to clear frost. Our wiper guide has the rest.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

How often should wiper blades be replaced?

The Car Care Council says to check them twice a year and replace at the first streaking. In Northern Nevada that often means once a year, usually in the fall before the first storm.

Are beam blades worth it?

Beam blades have no exposed frame to pack with ice and apply even pressure along the glass, which helps on a curved windshield in winter. We carry them in the common sizes.

Do you replace the rear wiper?

Yes, at all four service centers. Ask when you pull in, since it is the one most people forget.

Can you fix a wiper that stops in the middle of the glass?

That is the motor or the linkage, and a repair shop handles it. We can confirm it is not a seized blade or a blade hitting the trim.
