Battery Check for Work Vans
Work vans with ladder racks, inverters, lighting and shelving upfits draw more from the battery than a passenger vehicle, and a battery check at participating locations tests cranking capacity, charging voltage and the terminals so a weak battery is found before it strands a crew. The Car Care Council recommends testing at three years and before each winter, and fleet vans get the result on their service record.

A dead van battery costs a business a crew-morning, not just a jump start. Vans that idle at job sites to power tools, run auxiliary lighting or sit in a yard over a long weekend all put the battery under steady stress. A test with every fall oil change is the cheapest way we know to keep the 7 a.m. call from being about a van that will not start.

Common van battery stresses
Inverters running tools off the van, LED light bars and cargo lights left on, telematics boxes that draw a little power around the clock, and short trips between stops that never fully recharge the battery. Some vans have a second auxiliary battery for the upfit; we test what is reachable and tell you which battery each result belongs to.

What happens in the bay
The driver stays with the van. At participating locations, during the oil-change maintenance check, the technician tests the battery's cranking capacity against its label rating, reads the charging voltage with the engine running and looks over the terminals. The result is explained to the driver, and for fleet accounts it is written on the record.
When to test fleet vans
Test at three years old and every fall (Car Care Council). In Reno that fall test lands ahead of about 122 freezing nights a year; Carson Valley routes see more, about 188 in Minden (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Summer is not easy on batteries either, with roughly 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter in Reno cooking the battery under the hood.
Records that help a fleet manager
When every van's battery result is on its record with date and mileage, you can see which vans are close to the end before they fail. That turns a battery from a roadside surprise into a scheduled item. Our fleet program is described on the fleet page.
Habits that stretch van battery life
Ask drivers to switch off cargo lights and unplug inverters at the end of the day, and to avoid long idles with the engine barely above idle speed and every accessory running. Vans parked in a yard for a long weekend benefit from a maintainer on the upfit battery. None of that replaces a test, but together they mean fewer vans that will not start on a cold Monday in January.

What a customer said
My wife went in to buy a new battery for her car and they encouraged her to go to the dealer to get the warranty. When she checked and there was no warranty, they tested her battery and did not charge her even though she would have bought a new battery. Lastly, they fixed the XM radio for her for free. Although these were simple things, a lot of shops would have taken advantage of my wife's lack of knowledge of cars and charged her for these. This is a sign of honesty to me.
