Maintenance Check for High-Mileage Vehicles
On a vehicle past 100,000 miles, the maintenance check that comes with every full-service oil change is where small age-related problems show up: seeping gaskets, cracked belts, darkened fluids and tired wiper blades. It is done at all four service centers while you wait, and every finding is shown to you with the part in hand so you can decide what matters to you.

Older cars do not usually fail all at once. A valve cover gasket seeps for a year before it drips on the exhaust. A coolant hose softens before it splits. A tire loses a pound a week through an old valve stem. None of those set off a dashboard light, and all of them are things a regular look under the hood and under the car can catch while the fix is still small.

What we pay attention to on an older vehicle
The check covers the standard list, and the under-hood and under-chassis visuals do more work on a high-mileage car. The technician looks for oil and coolant residue, checks the condition of the fluids rather than just the levels, and notes anything that looks like it has changed since last time.
- Oil seeps at gaskets and seals
- Coolant level and color; residue at hoses
- Transmission fluid color and smell where checkable
- Brake fluid and power steering fluid
- Belt and hose condition in the under-hood visual
- Air filter, lights, wiper blades, tire pressure
- Battery test at participating locations
How often
The check rides along with each full-service oil change. AAA notes that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes, older engines and conventional oil closer to 3,000 to 5,000, and that the owner's manual sets the number. A high-mileage car that burns or seeps a little oil benefits from the shorter end, which also means a more frequent look.
Straight answers, your decision
You stay with the car in the bay. If we see something, you see it too, and you hear plainly what it usually means and whether it is something we do in the bay or something for a repair shop. On an older car, plenty of findings are "watch it" items rather than "fix it now" ones, and we say which is which. Nothing is done without your okay.
High mileage in a high-desert climate
Older rubber and plastic parts age faster in heat and dry air. Reno sees about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and only about 7.4 inches of precipitation (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and then about 122 freezing nights. Belts, hoses and seals take those swings year after year. A regular look is the most practical defense an older car has.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Should I switch to high-mileage oil?
Many owners of cars past 75,000 miles do. It contains seal conditioners that can help with minor seeps. Your manual's grade still applies.
Will you tell me everything that is wrong with my car?
We tell you what the maintenance check sees. It is a visual and fluid check, not a full diagnosis.
Do you fix leaks?
We do not repair gaskets or seals, but we show you where we see a leak so you can decide.
