Power Steering Flush for Work Vans
Some work vans, such as many Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models, still use hydraulic power steering, while many newer vans use electric steering with no fluid. We identify each van's system, check hydraulic fluid on every visit, flush it with the specified type when it is worn, and record it for the fleet file.

Delivery and service drivers turn the wheel more in a day than most drivers do in a week. Parallel parking at a curb in Midtown, backing into a loading dock in Sparks, three-point turns in a cul-de-sac in Damonte Ranch. On a van with hydraulic steering, every one of those maneuvers works the pump near full pressure.

Which vans have fluid to service
Mixed fleets often include both systems. Long-running van platforms like the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana use a belt-driven hydraulic pump. Many newer vans use electric power steering with no fluid. The owner's manual and the presence of a power steering reservoir tell us which, and we do not quote a flush on a van that cannot use one. Mercedes-Benz lists approved hydraulic fluids by sheet number on its operating fluids site for Sprinter models that need them.
- Each van's steering type noted on its first visit
- Fluid level and condition checked on hydraulic vans at every oil change
- Flush with the specified fluid when worn, quoted to your approver first
- Leaks or belt wear noted for your repair vendor
- Unit number and mileage on every invoice
Why vans wear steering fluid faster
Holding the wheel at full lock pushes a hydraulic pump to its relief pressure, which turns energy into heat in the fluid. A van that does that dozens of times a day, then idles at a job site, cooks its fluid faster than the mileage suggests. Ford's scheduled maintenance guide treats idling and heavy use as special operating conditions, and the Car Care Council's guidance is to check level and condition regularly and change dark fluid. Summer heat adds to it; the Reno airport averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).
How fleet visits work
- Drivers bring vans to whichever of the four service centers is on the route, no appointment needed.
- We check the steering type and fluid along with the oil change.
- Anything beyond the oil change is quoted to the person you name.
- Fleet accounts get detailed records by vehicle and priority scheduling through the fleet program.
Signs a driver should report
A whine at full lock, a heavy wheel on cold mornings, or a reservoir that keeps needing fluid are worth a call to the office. The fix may be fresh fluid, or it may be a pump or hose for your repair vendor, and we will say which. Send the van in today rather than after the route goes wrong.

What a customer said
I've been taking my vehicles here for over 10 years. They know my name, treat me as a close friend, honest about service needed and what is not necessary (they dont just add charges). One vehicle I had was over 250,000 miles and still running strong. They take good care of my cars and I trust the service they provide.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Do Transit vans need a power steering flush?
It depends on the model year and system. We check for a reservoir and tell you; vans with electric steering have no fluid.
Can you keep records for our whole fleet?
Yes. Every invoice is a record, and fleet accounts get records by unit.
Will drivers be asked to approve work?
Only if you say so. Fleet accounts name who approves extra work.
