Kingsbury Grade trips to Lake Tahoe and the valley's hot summers and hard freezes are what usually move a Minden vehicle onto the severe-service schedule.

Minden has the shortest commute in our area, a mean of 14.9 minutes (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and the steepest weekend drive. Kingsbury Grade, NV-207, climbs from the valley floor to Daggett Pass at about 7,339 feet before dropping to Stateline, more than 2,500 feet above our service center at 4,785 feet (USGS 3DEP). A short-commute car that does Kingsbury every weekend lives two very different lives.
The climb holds an automatic in lower gears under load for several miles, and the descent works it again as the transmission helps the brakes on the switchbacks. In winter the top of the grade is far colder than the valley. Toyota names severe weather and towing as reasons to change transmission fluid sooner, and for most makers the severe-service column lands between 30,000 and 60,000 miles. If your car does the grade regularly, that column is worth reading.
The Minden weather station records about 68 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter and 188 nights at or below freezing, 75 of them at 20 degrees or colder (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Heat ages transmission fluid; cold makes it thick, so first shifts on a January morning are slow. Few places put a transmission through both extremes the way the Carson Valley does.
From Esmeralda Avenue or Buckeye Road, get onto US-395 south; the service center is on the right at 1293 US Hwy 395 N, just past the Minden line on the north side of Gardnerville. College Parkway in Carson City is about 24 minutes north if you work there.
