Old Southwest Reno is about 11 minutes and 4.5 miles from our Longley Lane service center (OSRM routing, 10/15/26), and the transmission fluid service is done there while you wait. Short in-town trips and older vehicles with unknown histories are the two things that most often decide what an Old Southwest car needs.

The mean commute in 89509 is 18.5 minutes, one of the shortest in Washoe County, and households average 1.79 vehicles (Census ACS 5-year 2024). Short commutes sound gentle, and for an engine they are mixed news. For a transmission the question is simpler: does the fluid ever spend real time at steady temperature, or does it live in warm-up mode between Plumas, Lakeside and the grocery store?
The tree-lined streets around Arlington and Lakeside are full of vehicles that have been in the family a long time, and long ownership often means the transmission fluid was never changed at all. On a high-mileage unit with unknown history, a gentle approach makes sense: a drain-and-fill replaces the fluid in the pan, usually a third to a half of the total, without the sudden change of a full exchange. Newer cars in the neighborhood are a different case. Many have CVTs or eight-speed automatics with specific fluids, and Kelley Blue Book's advice is to follow the maker's schedule, which is exactly where we start.
Most manufacturers list transmission fluid somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 miles under severe service and longer under normal use. Toyota says stop-and-go driving, towing and severe weather call for shorter intervals. Short city trips in a Reno summer, about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter at the airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), put many Old Southwest cars on the severe side even without a trailer.
Head east on Plumb Lane toward the airport, south on Kietzke or South McCarran, then onto Longley Lane; the service center is at 4993 Longley Ln. From the California Avenue end, South Virginia to McCarran is just as quick. Mae Anne Avenue in northwest Reno is about 13 minutes if you are going up Keystone.
Longley Lane is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday, at (775) 828-6996. The oil change can happen in the same visit.

These guys are great. Fast courteous service. Upon arrival I was greeted by a technician who took the pertinent information and got me in the queue. I told him I was going to get lunch at a local restaurant and while I was there he called to say my truck was done. They didn't try to upsell me on a bunch of stuff I didn't need and overall I couldn’t have asked for more. 5 Stars all the way!
