Ram 1500 Oil Change: HEMI, EcoDiesel or Hurricane

A Ram 1500 takes the grade on its oil cap for its engine, and on the 2019 and newer 5.7 HEMI that is 0W-20; Ram's oil change indicator decides the timing. Kelley Blue Book's summary of Ram's schedule says the indicator may ask as soon as 4,000 miles or as late as 10,000, and that synthetic oil and filter should be changed by 10,000 miles or 12 months either way.

A pickup truck driving a snowy road in blowing wind

The Ram 1500 is one of the most common half-ton pickups in Washoe County, used for everything from contractor work in Spanish Springs to towing a camper up to Prosser. Its engine lineup has changed more in the last few years than in the previous decade, so the oil depends on which truck is in front of us.

Which engine is in your Ram

  • 5.7-liter HEMI V8, often with eTorque mild-hybrid assist on 2019 and newer trucks: 0W-20 per the cap on recent model years.
  • 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque: the grade on its cap.
  • 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 (2014 to 2023): a diesel engine oil meeting the Chrysler spec in its manual, plus diesel exhaust fluid and fuel filters.
  • 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo inline six: Ram's replacement for the HEMI on the 2025 truck, with the grade on its cap. Ram brought the 5.7 back as an option for 2026.

Reading the indicator honestly

Ram's oil change indicator estimates oil life from how the engine is used. Kelley Blue Book's summary of the 1500 schedule puts the range at about 4,000 to 10,000 miles, with a hard limit of 10,000 miles or 12 months for synthetic oil and filter. Towing, idling at job sites, short trips and extreme heat or cold all bring the alert sooner.

That last one is a Northern Nevada fact of life. Reno averages about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter and 122 freezing nights (NOAA 1991 to 2020). A work truck idling on a summer job site in Damonte Ranch with the A/C running is building engine hours without miles, which is exactly what the indicator is designed to catch.

HEMI tick and the right oil

HEMI owners sometimes ask about a ticking sound. We do not diagnose engine internals, but we can tell you the oil level, the grade that went in and whether the change is overdue, which are the first questions any service center will ask. The HEMI's cylinder deactivation system depends on the correct grade, so we never swap in a heavier oil. If a noise is new, see our ticking or knocking page.

Axles, transfer case, transmission

A 4x4 Ram 1500 has a front axle, a rear axle and a transfer case, each with its own fluid, and the eight-speed automatic has its own as well. Ram's schedule lists shorter intervals for towing and off-road use. We check levels on request and can do differential service and transmission fluid service with the fluids Ram names.

Bring the truck by

No appointment at any of our four service centers. We confirm the engine, drain, fit a new filter, refill to the manual's capacity, reset the indicator and run the multi-point check: filters, belts, coolant, brake fluid, battery at participating locations, tire pressure, lights and wipers. Fleet trucks get the same visit with records kept; see fleet service.

Gardnerville

Staff did a top quality oil change and added necessary top off fluids to my gear boxes. Also changed my air filter. Staff covered all the bases as it pertains to the scope of their services.

Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.

What oil does a Ram 1500 5.7 HEMI take?

On 2019 and newer trucks, 0W-20 per the cap and owner's manual. Older HEMIs list their own grade, and we match the cap.

Can a Ram 1500 go 10,000 miles between oil changes?

Only when the indicator says so. Kelley Blue Book's summary of Ram's schedule says 10,000 miles or 12 months is the most, and towing or idling brings the alert sooner.

Do you service the EcoDiesel?

Yes, with a diesel oil change using the oil its manual lists.

Does my Ram need a smog check in Reno?

In the Washoe County testing area, gas trucks and light-duty diesels are tested at renewal once past their first three registrations.
