Subaru Legacy Oil Change by Engine
A Subaru Legacy with the 2.5-liter four takes 0W-20 synthetic; the 3.6R six offered through the 2019 model year is listed at 5W-30 in the reproduced 2018 Subaru schedule; the 2.4-liter turbo in later XT trims gets the grade on its cap. All of them follow Subaru's 6,000-mile or 6-month interval, with 3,000 miles or 3 months under severe use.

The Legacy is the quiet Subaru: an all-wheel drive midsize sedan that state workers drive up and down I-580 between Reno and Carson City and that a lot of retirees in Minden keep for years. Because it has been sold with three different engines over the last decade, the first thing we do with a Legacy is find out which one it has.

Three engines, three answers
The first two rows come from the 2018 Subaru schedule reproduced on cars101.com. The six-cylinder holds more oil than the four, so a 3.6R takes a bigger fill; we refill to the capacity in your manual, not a generic number.
| Engine | Years seen | Grade per the schedule or cap |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5-liter four | Most Legacys | 0W-20 synthetic |
| 3.6R flat-six | Through the 2019 model year | 5W-30 |
| 2.4-liter turbo (XT) | 2020 and later XT trims | Grade printed on the cap |
Highway miles versus severe service
Subaru's car-care page sets most of its cars at 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first. A Legacy that commutes Reno to Carson City on I-580 every weekday is doing steady highway miles, which is the easy kind on oil. The same car parked through a Minden winter, where NOAA records about 188 nights a year at or below freezing (1991 to 2020 normals), and driven only to the post office is short-trip duty, which Subaru's manual puts on the severe list at 3,000 miles or 3 months.
We ask how you drive and set the sticker to match, and the six-month date goes on it either way.
Sedan, but still all-wheel drive
Like every Subaru except the BRZ, the Legacy is all-wheel drive. The CVT uses Subaru CVT fluid only, and the rear differential carries its own gear oil, listed at 15,000 miles or 15 months under severe driving in the reproduced schedule. Our differential service uses the oil Subaru names.
Long highway commutes are also hard on wiper blades and headlight bulbs. The I-580 run through Washoe Valley is dark on winter evenings, and we check both on every visit. See headlight and tail light bulbs.
What we do in the bay
Drive into 1861 E College Pkwy in Carson City, 1293 US Hwy 395 N in Gardnerville or either Reno service center, no appointment needed. We confirm the engine and grade, drain, fit a new filter, refill, reset the reminder and run the multi-point check: air filter, cabin filter on request, belts, coolant level, brake fluid, battery at participating locations, tire pressure, lights and wipers. You hear what we found before anything else happens.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
What oil does a Subaru Legacy 3.6R take?
5W-30, per the 2018 Subaru schedule reproduced on cars101.com. It also holds more oil than the four-cylinder.
How do I know if my Legacy is the turbo?
XT trims from 2020 on carry the 2.4-liter turbo. We confirm from the engine and the cap when you pull in.
Is my daily Reno to Carson City commute severe service?
Steady highway driving is usually the normal schedule. Short trips, cold starts, towing and dusty roads are what Subaru counts as severe.
Do you do the CVT on a Legacy?
Yes, with Subaru CVT fluid, following the schedule for how the car is used.
