SUVs and Crossovers: The Oil Change Plus the AWD Parts
An SUV takes the same kind of oil change as a car, but most owner's guides add items a sedan does not have: rear differential and transfer case fluid on all-wheel and four-wheel drive models, and a shorter list when the SUV tows, carries a roof box or runs dusty roads. The cabin filter also works harder in a vehicle full of people, dogs and ski gear.

Northern Nevada buys SUVs for good reasons. Snow on the Mount Rose Highway, gravel driveways in Washoe Valley and Johnson Lane, and a family of five heading to Lake Tahoe on a Saturday all favor a taller vehicle with all-wheel drive. That same use is what pushes an SUV onto the harder side of its maintenance schedule. This page is about the differences: which fluids an AWD crossover adds, what a roof box has to do with oil, and how we handle a loaded family hauler in our bay.
At a glance
- AWD and 4WD SUVs add rear differential oil and often transfer case oil to the schedule
- Toyota's 2025 RAV4 guide replaces rear differential and transfer case oil on a shorter schedule when towing or heavily loaded
- A car-top carrier counts as a special operating condition in Toyota's guides
- Cabin filters clog faster with dust, pets and wildfire smoke
- Drive in at any of our four service centers; no appointment

What all-wheel drive adds under the floor
A front-drive sedan has one gearbox. An all-wheel-drive crossover usually has a transmission, a power take-off or transfer case that splits torque toward the back, and a rear differential, each with its own oil. Truck-based SUVs such as a 4Runner, Tahoe or Grand Cherokee add a front differential too. Toyota's 2025 RAV4 maintenance guide shows the pattern well: on the standard schedule the rear differential oil is inspected and the transfer case oil is inspected and then replaced, while under its towing and heavy-loading condition both are replaced on a tighter schedule.
Those fluids rarely leak and never show on the dashboard, so they get forgotten. Our differential service drains and refills them with the gear oil or AWD fluid the manual names.
Roof boxes, bike racks and small trailers
Most SUV owners would not say they tow. Many still do something the guide treats the same way. Toyota's maintenance guides group towing a trailer, using a car-top carrier and heavy vehicle loading into one special operating condition. A Highlander with a cargo box on the roof, seven people aboard and a 7,000-foot pass ahead of it is under that condition for the day, and if that describes most weekends, the shorter schedule is the right one.
Altitude adds to it. Our service centers sit between about 4,400 and 4,900 feet (USGS elevation data), and the routes to Tahoe climb well past 7,000. A naturally aspirated V6 makes less power in thin air and works harder for the same climb, and a small turbo engine runs more boost to keep up. Either way the oil runs hotter.
The cabin filter in a family vehicle
The cabin air filter cleans everything the passengers breathe. In an SUV that carries dogs, muddy boots and kids' sports gear, it loads up faster than the same filter in a commuter sedan, and the high desert adds dust. The Car Care Council suggests replacing it about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, and sooner where the air is dusty.
Wildfire smoke is the Northern Nevada twist. When smoke from California fires settles into the Truckee Meadows and the Carson Valley in late summer, the filter is doing real work, and a gray one cannot keep up. We pull it on request, show it to you next to a new one and let you decide. Our wildfire smoke season page has more.
An SUV visit at our service centers
Pull into the drive-in bay at Mae Anne Avenue, Longley Lane, College Parkway or US 395. We check the oil grade on the cap, change the oil and filter, and run the multi-point maintenance check: engine air filter, cabin filter on request, battery at participating locations, coolant, brake fluid level, power steering fluid, tire pressure, lights and wipers. Differential and transfer case fluids are checked on request.
Tell us how the SUV is used, especially if it carries a roof box, tows or lives on a dirt road. That decides which schedule we write on the sticker. Then you decide what, if anything, gets done beyond the oil.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Does my AWD crossover need differential service?
Most do at some point. The owner's guide lists the rear differential and any transfer case, often with a shorter interval for towing or heavy loads. We service them with the fluid the manual names.
Does a roof box really count as severe service?
In Toyota's maintenance guides, yes: a car-top carrier is grouped with towing and heavy loading as a special operating condition. Check your own manual for how your maker treats it.
How often should I change the cabin filter on my SUV?
The Car Care Council suggests about every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, sooner in dust or smoke. We will show you the old one so you can judge it yourself.
Which service center is easiest for a Tahoe trip?
Longley Lane in south Reno sits closest to the Mount Rose Highway, and Gardnerville on US 395 is on the way to Kingsbury Grade.
