Volkswagen Taos Oil Change: The Small SUV With a Strict Oil
Every Taos sold in the US since the 2022 model year uses the 1.5-liter turbo, which calls for a 0W-20 full synthetic carrying VW 508 00. Volkswagen schedules its service every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first, and the reminder in the cluster counts to that.

The Taos is the youngest Volkswagen in our bays, and a lot of Taos owners are first-time VW owners who bought it for the size and the all-wheel drive. Their question is simple: can a drive-in do the oil without causing a problem later? Yes, as long as the oil carries the approval. Here is what that approval is, how the schedule works and what we check on a Taos.

One engine, one approval
The Taos has had one engine in the US: the EA211 evo 1.5T four-cylinder. Its manual and under-hood sticker list a 0W-20 oil meeting VW 508 00. The approval matters because the 1.5T is built with low-friction parts and a variable-geometry turbo that assume a thin, very stable oil. Oil maker Fuchs describes VW 508 00 as the low-viscosity standard for the newest VW engines.
Shelf 0W-20 made for a Japanese or domestic engine usually carries API and ILSAC marks but not VW 508 00. Same thickness, different test sheet. We pour a 508 00 oil in the Taos every time.
When the Taos is due
Volkswagen's newsroom puts it simply: maintenance every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever occurs first. New Taos owners get the first two scheduled services under Carefree at the dealer, and plenty of them come to us for the visits after that or for a level check in between.
Many Taos owners here are students or North Valleys commuters. The 89506 Stead ZIP averages a 24.8-minute commute and 89508 averages 34.4 (ACS 2020-2024), mostly on US-395. That mix of highway and short stop-and-go tends to bring the mileage side up first. If the Taos lives on short trips around campus, ask us about coming in a bit early; owner's manuals treat short-trip driving as harder service.
4MOTION, DSG and the filters
Front-drive Taos models use an eight-speed automatic with a torque converter. All-wheel-drive Taos models pair 4MOTION with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, and Volkswagen lists a DSG fluid change and a rear coupling fluid change at their own intervals in the maintenance booklet. We read the booklet, tell you if either is due, and say plainly when a procedure needs dealer equipment.
The engine air filter is easy to reach and worth checking every visit in our dust. The cabin filter sits behind the glovebox, and in a smoky August it can go gray in a few months. We show you the old one before suggesting a new cabin air filter.
A Taos at Xpress Oil & Lube
- Drive in at any of the four service centers; no appointment.
- VW 508 00 full synthetic, a new cartridge filter and its O-ring.
- Check of coolant, brake fluid, battery (participating locations), tires, lights and wipers.
- Service reminder reset and a quick summary. You decide on any extra item.
Smog and registration
A Taos is new enough that many are still in their first three registrations, which the Nevada DMV exempts from smog checks. After that, a Taos registered in the Washoe testing area needs one each year, and both Reno service centers test. Carson City and Douglas County do not require a smog check for registration.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Is 0W-20 enough for a Taos in Reno summer heat?
Yes, when it carries VW 508 00. Volkswagen wrote that approval for this engine; the approval is what matters, not a thicker oil.
Does the Taos DSG need fluid changes?
All-wheel-drive Taos models have a DSG gearbox with its own fluid interval in Volkswagen's booklet. We check the booklet for your car.
Will you reset my Taos maintenance light?
Yes, at every service center after the oil service.
