Battery check for Verdi drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 13 minutes
Verdi is about 13 minutes from our Mae Anne Avenue service center on I-80, and a battery check there measures voltage, cold cranking amps and the condition of the terminals. Test once the battery is three years old and before every winter, as the Car Care Council recommends.
Ski racks on the roof, chains in the back, a trailhead at Dog Valley or a day at Boreal: Verdi people drive west into the mountains when it is coldest. A dead battery in the driveway is an annoyance. A dead battery in a ski area parking lot on Donner Summit after a day on the snow is a long afternoon. That is the case for testing it before the season starts.
What colder air does to a battery
Battery chemistry slows as the temperature falls, so a battery that easily starts the car at 60 degrees delivers noticeably less at 20. The Reno airport, the closest long weather record, averages 122 nights a year at or below freezing and about 25 at 20 degrees or colder (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Verdi sits higher, in the canyon where the cold settles, and the Sierra passes west of it are colder again. Meanwhile the engine's oil is at its thickest, which makes the starter work harder.
Altitude by itself does not drain a battery. The cold that comes with it does, and so does a ski day of the engine sitting cold for eight hours before the drive home.
The test, item by item
Resting voltage, to see whether the battery is fully charged.
Cold cranking amps compared with the rating on the case, the honest measure of whether it will start the car on a freezing morning.
Charging voltage with the engine idling, so a weak alternator does not hide behind a new battery.
Terminals, cables and the hold-down, checked for corrosion, looseness and a case that has swollen from heat.
Freeway miles help, cold starts do not
Verdi commuting is mostly I-80: 81.8 percent of workers in 89439 drive alone and the mean commute is 20.9 minutes (Census ACS 5-year 2024). A steady freeway drive is good for a battery because the alternator has time to recharge it. The cold start that begins the drive is the hard part, and a battery past three years old, the Car Care Council's line, may not have much margin left for it.
When the battery fails the test
We tell you, show you the numbers and give you the rating to look for. The battery check is a test; we do not sell or install batteries as part of it, so the next step is the dealer, an auto parts store or your mechanic. The test is available at participating locations and comes with the maintenance check on a full-service oil change.
From Verdi, take I-80 east to West McCarran, north to Mae Anne Avenue, and the service center is at 6100 Mae Anne Ave, about 13 minutes and 7.5 miles by OSRM free-flow routing.
Open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday; (775) 787-1000. Drive in, no appointment.

What a customer said
Reno Northwest
Super satisfied with the service. Only tried to up my service for things I truly needed (air filter had TONS of burning man dust left in it, and they asked if I would like to replace). They were fast and professional. Do NOT confuse them with the garage next door. Those guys really suck.

Should I test the battery before ski season?
Yes, if it is three years old or older. The cold at the resorts is where a marginal battery gives up.
Does driving to Truckee charge the battery?
A steady highway drive does recharge it. What it cannot do is restore capacity a worn battery has lost.
How long is the drive from Verdi?
About 13 minutes and 7.5 miles on I-80 and West McCarran (OSRM).
What happens if it fails?
We tell you plainly and point you to where you can buy and install the right battery.
