Sparks is a city of its own, about 110,000 people (Census ACS 5-year 2020-2024), with its own shopping, its own neighborhoods and its own oil change service centers. Still, a steady share of the cars in our Longley Lane bay have Sparks addresses on their registrations. Here is why, and how to make the trip worth it.

The drive
By free-flow routing, central Sparks and the 89431 ZIP are about 5.4 miles from the Longley service center. East Sparks and Vista are about 13.4 miles, Wingfield Springs about 11.9, and Spanish Springs about 15.8 (OSRM). Pyramid Way traffic makes the Spanish Springs trip feel longer than the map suggests.
The usual routes are I-80 west to I-580 south, or McCarran Boulevard around the east side of Reno. Our Reno Northwest service center on Mae Anne Avenue is the other option for Sparks drivers heading west.
Why two errands are better than one
Sparks sits inside the Washoe County emissions testing area, so a Sparks-registered car needs a smog check every year at renewal once it is past its first three registrations (Nevada DMV emission page). A passing result is valid for 90 days (NRS 445B.800). That makes it easy to line up the test with an oil change that is due around the same time.
Reviewers describe exactly that habit at Longley. Aaron H. wrote that his household uses the service center for smog and oil changes (Google review). Ross B. has been going for five years and called the smog service fast and easy (Google review). Michael L. wrote that the service center does his smog, registration and an oil change in one visit (Google review).
- Check the renewal month on your registration
- Note when the oil is due by the sticker or monitor
- If they fall within a few weeks, do both in one Longley visit
What Sparks households drive
Sparks households average 1.99 vehicles and 65 percent have two or more (Census ACS). Spanish Springs runs higher, at 2.74 vehicles per household. A lot of those are trucks and SUVs that commute to the industrial parks east of Sparks or tow on weekends. Arturo M. wrote that he takes all three of his vehicles to Longley and they know what they are doing (Google review). Michele G. said the crew did a great job with her truck and she did not feel pressured to buy anything extra (Google review).
Bringing every car on one Saturday is a common plan for multi-car households. The bay can take them one after another with no appointment.
Hours and what to bring
Longley is open Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday. For a smog check, bring the registration notice and arrive with the engine warm. For the oil change, nothing is needed; the technician will look up the right oil for your vehicle.
The Sparks service area page has the details, and the Reno vs Sparks smog comparison answers whether the rules differ (they do not). When the renewal letter arrives, the Longley Lane service center is a short drive away.
