Carson City is colder than Reno, and that changes what a coolant check is mostly about. The Carson City weather station averages 146 nights a year at or below freezing, about 43 at 20 F or colder and one or two at zero or below, while it sees fewer hot days than Reno, about 40 a year at 90 F or more (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). The 89706 ZIP around the service center holds about 20,478 people with 1.88 vehicles per household and a 21.9 minute commute (Census ACS 5-year 2024).

Three minutes from home

The service center is at 1861 E College Pkwy, a short way west of the US-50 and I-580 interchange and before you reach North Carson Street. From the neighborhoods off Arrowhead Drive, Northgate Lane or Hot Springs Road, it is a few turns away. Hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday. Call (775) 883-5823 with questions.

What the freeze test tells you

Coolant is a mix of glycol and water, and the ratio decides how cold it can get before it starts to turn to slush. A refractometer reads that point from a few drops. When a car has been topped off with plain water over the years, the reading creeps up, and in a town with this many freezing nights that matters: frozen coolant expands, and the radiator, heater core and engine block are what get pushed. If your reading is fine, we tell you so and you keep your coolant.

The same test also shows the condition of the fluid. Rust-colored or cloudy coolant has spent its inhibitors. Oil in the coolant points to a mechanical problem, and we will tell you that a repair shop should see it.

When the flush is due

Your owner's manual gives the interval. AAA's guide to coolant types gives the typical ranges: about two years or 24,000 miles for the older green IAT coolant, about five years or 50,000 miles for OAT, which is common on GM vehicles, and the same for HOAT, which is common on Ford and Chrysler vehicles, with some automakers allowing up to ten years or 150,000. AAA notes that color does not tell you the type.

The flush, in order

  1. You approve a written estimate first; Nevada's NRS 487.6875 requires one for work over fifty dollars.
  2. Old coolant drains from the radiator and from the block where it is accessible, into a container for recycling.
  3. The specified coolant goes in at the correct mix.
  4. Air is bled out so the heater core fills and the gauge reads true.
  5. Cap, hoses and reservoir get a final look and the heater is checked.
