Kelley Blue Book says a replacement car battery runs about $45 to $250 depending on power, size and quality, and Jerry's April 2026 estimate puts a professionally installed battery at $268 to $368. A test costs far less than either, which is why we check the battery before it strands you on a cold morning.
Car batteries rarely give much warning. They lose capacity quietly over a few summers and then fail on the first hard freeze, usually in a parking lot. The price of a new one depends on the size and type your vehicle takes, whether it is a standard flooded battery or an AGM, and whether the car needs the new battery registered to its computer. Below are the published figures we read on October 15, 2026, with sources. Our service centers test batteries; the test tells you whether you need any of these numbers yet.

Reading the published prices
Kelley Blue Book's battery replacement page gives the broad part range: about $45 to $250, depending on power, size and quality. Jerry's published estimate, dated April 28, 2026, adds installation for a total of $268 to $368, with the battery at $200 to $300 and labor at $39 to $117. It also lists the extras that surprise people: $25 to $80 to register or program the battery on vehicles that require it, and $10 to $25 in taxes, fees and a refundable core charge.
Consumer Reports' battery buying guide notes that AGM batteries can cost 40 to 100 percent more than highly rated conventional batteries. Many newer vehicles with start-stop engines need an AGM, so check what yours came with before comparing prices.
How long a battery lasts here
Consumer Reports, citing AAA, says car batteries typically last three to five years, with lifespan shorter in hot regions and longer in cold ones. Kelley Blue Book's page says extreme temperatures, heavy accessory use and towing can cut life to three or four years. Northern Nevada gives a battery both stresses. The Reno airport averages 65 days a year at 90 F or more, which ages the plates, and 122 nights at or below freezing, when a weakened battery finally cannot turn the engine over (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).
Carson Valley is harder still. The Minden station averages 188.5 freezing nights and 75.1 nights at or below 20 F a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Consumer Reports recommends an annual load test starting at age two in warm climates or age four in cold ones; with summers like ours, the earlier schedule is the safer one.
Test before you buy
A battery test measures how much cranking power the battery can still deliver compared with its rating, and checks the charging system so a bad alternator is not blamed on a good battery. At our service centers the battery check is part of the multi-point inspection at participating locations, and you can ask for it on any visit, no appointment.
If the result says the battery is weak, we show you the printout and tell you what we found. You decide whether to replace it now, before the cold, or keep an eye on it. Our battery check page explains the test, and the check vs replacement comparison covers when each makes sense.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Why does a battery cost so much more installed than on the shelf?
Labor, testing, fees and on some vehicles registration. Jerry's published April 2026 estimate breaks it out as $200 to $300 for the battery and $39 to $117 for labor, plus extras.
How often should I test my battery in Reno?
Once a year from about age two, and every fall before the freezing nights start. Consumer Reports recommends earlier testing in hot climates, and Reno summers count.
Is an AGM battery worth it?
If your vehicle came with one or has start-stop, yes, because the system expects it. Otherwise a quality flooded battery in the right group size is fine.
What is a core charge?
A deposit on the old battery, refunded when you return it for recycling. Jerry lists it within a $10 to $25 range of fees.
