Work from home and commuting across the region
About 12.6 percent of Washoe County workers worked from home in the 2020-2024 Census survey, by our calculation, while 68.7 percent drove alone and the mean commute was 22.5 minutes (ACS 2020-2024). Working from home changes car care more than people expect, because short, cold trips and long sits push a car toward the months side of its maintenance schedule.

How people get to work decides how their cars wear. A long highway commute racks up miles but is easy on oil; a car that leaves the garage twice a week for errands barely warms up and can need service by the calendar instead of the odometer. We used the Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 2020-2024 to compare work-from-home shares, drove-alone shares and mean travel times across the area our service centers serve. The generated table shows commute times and drove-alone shares; the work-from-home shares in the text are our calculation from the same survey.

Highlights
- Incline Village: about 42 percent of workers worked from home, the highest share in our data (ACS 2020-2024, our calculation).
- Washoe County: mean commute 22.5 minutes, 68.7 percent drove alone, about 12.6 percent worked from home (ACS 2020-2024).
- Lyon County: mean commute 29.4 minutes and 76.6 percent drove alone, with about 8.2 percent working from home (ACS 2020-2024).
- South Reno (89511) and Damonte Ranch (89521): about 21 and 20 percent of workers worked from home (ACS 2020-2024, our calculation).
- Minden has the shortest mean commute of the named towns at 14.9 minutes (ACS 2020-2024).

Who works from home
Work-from-home shares in our data cluster in the high-income, lake and south Reno areas. By our calculation from the 2020-2024 survey, about 42 percent of Incline Village workers worked from home, about 31 percent in Kingsbury above Stateline and about 30 percent in Truckee, California (ACS 2020-2024). In Reno, South Reno (89511) runs about 21 percent, Damonte Ranch and South Meadows (89521) about 20, Caughlin Ranch (89519) about 19 and Old Southwest Reno (89509) about 18.
The lowest shares are in places with more hands-on and shift work. The University and North Reno area (89512) comes in under 4 percent, and Sun Valley, Silver Springs, Stagecoach and Gardnerville's town center each run under 5 percent (ACS 2020-2024, our calculation).
Who drives, and how far
Most workers in the region drive alone. The drove-alone share is 68.7 percent in Washoe County, 70.6 percent in Carson City, 73.8 percent in Douglas County and 76.6 percent in Lyon County (ACS 2020-2024). Incline Village is the exception at 44.5 percent, largely because so many work from home.
Commutes lengthen as you move away from Reno and Carson City. Mean travel time is 20.3 minutes in Reno and 20.5 in Carson City, 24.0 in Sparks, 29.4 in Lyon County, 33.0 in Spanish Springs, 38.7 in Storey County and 41.4 in Topaz Ranch Estates (ACS 2020-2024). Minden's 14.9 minutes is the shortest of the named towns, a reminder that many Carson Valley residents work close to home.
- Washoe County: 22.5 minute mean commute, about 12.6 percent work from home (ACS 2020-2024)
- Carson City: 20.5 minutes, about 9.8 percent
- Douglas County: 26.2 minutes, about 12.7 percent
- Lyon County: 29.4 minutes, about 8.2 percent
- Storey County: 38.7 minutes, about 17.5 percent
What a home-based schedule does to a car
Owner's manuals give two numbers for an oil change, miles and months, and say to use whichever comes first. A car that commutes 30 minutes each way on US 50 or I-580 hits the miles. A car that sits most of the week, then makes short trips to the store, hits the months, and short trips are on most manufacturers' severe-service lists because the engine rarely gets hot enough to drive off moisture and fuel. In a place with 122 freezing nights a year at the Reno airport (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), that effect is stronger in winter.
Batteries suffer in the same pattern. A car that is started rarely and driven briefly never fully recharges, and a battery that is half charged freezes and fails sooner. AAA's guidance is that many modern engines on synthetic oil go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes; for a lightly driven car, the months limit in the manual usually arrives first.
Matching service to how you drive
Tell the technician how the car is used and we will point you to the right column of the manual. Our miles vs oil-life monitor comparison and the miles vs months guide explain the choice, and What's due estimates the next service from your own miles per year. All four service centers take vehicles without an appointment, including the one that has not left the garage in a month.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How did you calculate the work-from-home share?
Workers 16 and over minus workers who reported a commute, divided by workers 16 and over, from the Census Bureau's ACS 5-year 2020-2024 tables.
Does working from home mean fewer oil changes?
Fewer by miles, often not by months. Short trips and long sits are severe service in many manuals, so the months interval usually decides.
Where are the longest commutes near your service centers?
Topaz Ranch Estates at 41.4 minutes and Storey County at 38.7, then Spanish Springs at 33.0 (ACS 2020-2024).
Is a short commute easier on a car?
Short trips are actually harder on oil and batteries than steady highway driving, because the engine and battery never fully warm and recharge.
