Longley Lane runs the Nevada DMV emissions test for vehicles registered in the Washoe County testing area, with no appointment, and the passing result is sent to the DMV electronically. It is required every year once a vehicle passes its first three registrations, and a pass is valid 90 days.
More reviewers mention the smog check at Longley Lane than at any other service center we run, and most of them say the same two things: it was quick, and they renewed their registration the same day. Megan L. wrote in a Google review: "Went in for a smog and registration renewal. Everyone is always so nice and helpful. The service is quick and efficient." The service center is off Mill Street between the airport and I-580, which puts it on the way for most of south Reno and Sparks. What follows is the Washoe rule, the visit, the fee cap and what to do if the car fails.
The visit
Bring the renewal notice or the current registration. The technician plugs the state's analyzer into the OBD-II port on 1996 and newer vehicles, confirms the readiness monitors are set, inspects the emissions equipment and runs the test; older vehicles get a tailpipe test. A pass goes to the DMV electronically and you get a printed certificate. You then renew online, by mail or at a DMV kiosk; reviewers of this service center mention having the renewal handled at the counter, so ask what can be done that day. A passing test is valid for 90 days, so schedule it inside the renewal window, not in advance.
On the price, the Nevada DMV emission page lists the 2026 Washoe County cap for a light-duty gasoline inspection at $64.50 plus a $7 DMV certificate fee, and a station sets its own price up to that cap.
Who has to test
Under the Nevada DMV Emission Control Program, vehicles registered in the Washoe County testing area, which takes in Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley and most of the county south of the 40th parallel, need an annual test; the Las Vegas Valley part of Clark County is the only other testing area in the state. Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties do not test, and Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth are exempt within Washoe. The test covers gasoline vehicles from model year 1968 on and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR.
The exemptions matter for a lot of south Reno drivers: a new vehicle is exempt for its first three registrations and tests from the fourth, hybrids are exempt for their first five model years, and electric vehicles, motorcycles and 1967-and-older vehicles do not test. If you moved here from Carson City, the DMV tells you when your first test is due. The Washoe versus Carson rules page lays the two side by side.
If it fails, and how to avoid that
A check engine light is a fail before the test starts on an OBD-II vehicle, so get the code read first; the check engine light guide explains why. Do not clear codes or disconnect the battery in the days before, because the readiness monitors reset and the car cannot be tested until it has been driven enough to set them. A failed car gets a printed report of what failed. Longley Lane is a test station, not an emissions repair shop, so repairs are done elsewhere and the car returns for a retest; failed smog check: what now has the steps, including the waiver route.
Hours and the drive
Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 3, no appointment; Saturday closes an hour earlier than our Mae Anne Avenue service center, so come in the morning. South Reno is about 5 minutes away, the airport area and Hidden Valley about 8, Damonte Ranch about 9, Sparks, Midtown and Caughlin Ranch about 10 and Old Southwest about 11 (OSRM free-flow drive times, 2026), all inside the testing area. Combine the test with a full-service oil change and the renewal and the sticker are handled in one stop. If the notice is on the counter, drive in today.
Any full-service oil change, conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic, with the multi-point maintenance check.

Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Can I renew my registration at the service center after the test?
The passing result goes to the DMV electronically, so you can renew online or at a kiosk right away. Ask the technician what the service center can process at the counter that day.
Does my hybrid need a smog check?
Not for its first five model years; after that, yes, every year at renewal, per the Nevada DMV.
I just replaced the battery. Can I test today?
Probably not. The readiness monitors need drive time to set. Drive the car a few days under mixed conditions first.
Does Sparks count as the Washoe testing area?
Yes. Sparks, Reno and Washoe Valley are all in it.
