A coolant flush at Longley Lane starts with a freeze-point test; if the coolant is due, the system is drained, flushed and refilled with the type and mix the manufacturer specifies. Long-life coolants are typically scheduled at 5 years or 100,000 miles, older green coolant at about 2 years or 30,000 miles.
Every summer a few cars come down the Mount Rose Highway with the heater on full blast and the windows open, because the driver read somewhere that it pulls heat off an overheating engine. It does, a little. A cooling system that was tested in May would not have needed it. The coolant service at our Longley Lane service center, a few minutes from the bottom of that highway, is the one most south Reno drivers never think about until the needle moves.
The test comes first
A refractometer reading of the coolant's freeze point takes a minute and is part of the multi-point check on every full-service oil change at this service center. Reno averages about 122 nights at or below freezing and about 25 at 20 F or colder (NOAA 1991-2020 normals); coolant mixed too thin or worn out protects against neither that nor the 65 days of 90 F heat. The technician reads the number to you. If it is within spec and the coolant is within the manufacturer's age, nothing more is done.
The flush, when it is due
The old coolant is drained from the radiator and, where the design allows, the block; the system is flushed, then refilled with the coolant type the manufacturer specifies at the right mix and bled of air, because an air pocket is a quick way to overheat on the first hill. Hoses, clamps, the radiator cap and the visible fins get a look while the system is open. Modern coolants come in several chemistries that do not mix; the coolant types guide explains which car takes which.
The manufacturers set the interval: long-life coolants at 5 years or 100,000 miles or more, the older conventional coolant at about 2 years or 30,000 miles. Your manual has the figure. Radiators, water pumps, thermostats and head gaskets are not replaced here; if the inspection or a sweet coolant smell points there, you leave knowing it.
South Reno and the airport side
The Longley Lane service center is at about 4,400 feet (USGS 3DEP), the lowest of our four, but the roads out of here go up: the Mount Rose Highway, the Geiger Grade to Virginia City, and I-580 over the hill to Washoe Valley and Carson. A fleet van idling in the airport cell lot on a July afternoon is its own kind of load. South Reno is about 5 minutes away, the airport area and Hidden Valley about 8, Damonte Ranch about 9, Sparks and Midtown about 10, and Washoe Valley about 23 (OSRM free-flow drive times, 2026).
Hours
Monday to Friday 8 to 5, Saturday 8 to 3, closed Sunday, no appointment; pull off Mill Street onto Longley Lane and look for the bays beside the car wash. Have the coolant tested before the first freeze in the fall and again before the June heat, and if you cannot say when it was last changed, drive in today and find out.
I've been coming here for smog checks for like 10 years. It's always fast, the guys in the shop are awesome and let me hang out with them by my car. Aaron in particular is just a great guy. Top notch place for an easy smog check!

Can I mix coolant colors if I am low?
Better not. Different chemistries can gel. Top off with the type your manual lists, or let the technician check which one you have.
How often should coolant be tested?
Twice a year is sensible in Reno, before winter and before summer, and it is included with the maintenance check on every oil change here.
My temperature gauge spikes on Mount Rose. Is a flush the answer?
Not necessarily. Low coolant, a weak cap, a stuck thermostat or a failing fan all do that. We test and tell you what we find; the overheating page lists the rest.
