Vehicles registered in the Washoe County testing area need an emissions test every year once they pass their first three registrations, and the Mae Anne Avenue service center runs it with no appointment. A passing result is transmitted to the DMV electronically and is valid for 90 days.
If the renewal notice says an emissions test is required, 6100 Mae Anne Ave is the northwest Reno place to get it done on the way to or from anything else. The bay runs the Nevada DMV test, the result goes to the DMV the moment it passes, and you can renew online the same day. This page gives the DMV rules for Washoe County in plain words, what to bring, what happens if the car fails, and how the visit goes.
The Washoe County rule
The Nevada DMV requires an annual emissions inspection for vehicles registered in the urban parts of Washoe County, which covers Reno, Sparks, Washoe Valley and most of the county south of the 40th parallel, and in the Las Vegas Valley portion of Clark County. Incline Village, Crystal Bay, Sutcliffe, Nixon and Wadsworth are exempt, and Carson City, Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties do not test at all (Nevada DMV emission program page). So a Somersett, Mogul, Verdi or University-area registration needs the test; a Carson City one does not.
The test applies to gasoline vehicles from model year 1968 on and diesels up to 14,000 pounds GVWR. New vehicles are exempt for their first three registrations and start testing with the fourth; hybrids are exempt for their first five model years. Electric vehicles, motorcycles and 1967-and-older vehicles are not tested.
How the test goes at Mae Anne
Pull in, hand over the registration renewal notice or the current registration, and the technician connects the state's equipment to the car's OBD-II port on 1996-and-newer vehicles, checks the readiness monitors and the emissions equipment, and runs the inspection. A passing result is sent to the DMV electronically and a certificate is printed for your records. From there you renew online, by mail or at a kiosk; the passing test is valid for 90 days, so get it done before the renewal, not months ahead.
On fees, the Nevada DMV emission page lists the 2026 Washoe maximum for a light-duty gasoline inspection at $64.50 plus a $7 DMV certificate fee, and stations set their own price at or below that cap. Reviewers of this service center mention having their registration renewal handled at the same visit; ask the technician what can be done on the day.

Before you come, and if it fails
Do not disconnect the battery or clear a check engine light right before the test: the readiness monitors reset and the car will not be ready to test until it has been driven enough to set them again. Run our pre-test checklist. A lit check engine light is an automatic fail on 1996-and-newer vehicles, so sort that out first; the check engine light and smog guide explains why.
If the car fails, you get the printed report showing what failed. We are an inspection station, not an emissions repair shop, so the repair happens elsewhere and the car comes back for a retest. The failed smog check guide walks through the steps.

How long is a passing smog check valid in Nevada?
90 days from the test date for a standard renewal, per the Nevada DMV, so time it close to your renewal.
My car is three years old. Do I need a test yet?
The first three registrations of a new vehicle are exempt; testing starts with the fourth registration. Hybrids are exempt for their first five model years.
Does the result go to the DMV automatically?
Yes. The passing result is transmitted electronically, and you can renew online, by mail or at a kiosk the same day.
Can a Carson City car get tested here?
A Carson City registration does not require a test. If you are moving a vehicle into a Reno address, the DMV will tell you when the first test is due.
