A coolant flush at our Mae Anne Avenue service center replaces old coolant with the type your manufacturer specifies and checks the system for freeze and boil-over protection. Long-life coolants typically run 5 years or 100,000 miles by manufacturer schedule; older green coolant about 2 years or 30,000 miles.
Reno asks a cooling system to do two opposite jobs in one year. The airport station averages about 122 nights at or below freezing and about 25 nights at 20 F or colder, and then about 65 days at 90 F or hotter with 6 over 100 F (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Coolant that has lost its additives protects against neither, and the first sign is usually a temperature needle climbing on the Mount Rose Highway. The bay at 6100 Mae Anne Ave checks the coolant on every oil change and does the full service when it is due.
How the service goes at this service center
The technician tests the old coolant first: freeze point with a refractometer and a look at color and clarity. If it is due, the old coolant is drained and the system is flushed, then refilled with the correct type and the correct mix, and bled so no air is trapped. Modern engines use several incompatible coolant chemistries, and the right one depends on the make and year; our coolant types guide explains the colors. Hoses, clamps, the radiator cap and the visible parts of the radiator get a look while the system is open.
If the reading is fine, you hear that and nothing is sold. If a hose is soft or the cap is weak, you hear that too and decide. The service center does not replace radiators, water pumps or head gaskets; a sweet smell or a persistent loss of coolant gets pointed out so you can plan the repair.
When it is due
Long-life coolants are typically scheduled by the manufacturer at 5 years or 100,000 miles or more; the older conventional green coolant was about 2 years or 30,000 miles. Your owner's manual gives the exact figure. Most cars in northwest Reno are on a long-life fill, which means the service is rare but the condition check is not: coolant level and condition are part of the multi-point check on every full-service oil change here.
The northwest Reno angle
Everything on this side of town involves a hill. Somersett and Northgate sit above Mae Anne, Mogul and Verdi are down the I-80 grade, and the trip to Tahoe climbs thousands of feet in a few miles. The service center is at about 4,900 feet (USGS 3DEP), and the thinner air at altitude means the radiator fan and the coolant do more of the work on a hot August climb. A well-mixed, in-date coolant is the simplest insurance on that road.
Mogul is about 7 minutes from the service center, Northwest Reno about 8, Somersett and the University area about 10, Old Northwest about 11 and Verdi about 13 (OSRM free-flow drive times, 2026).
Hours and why now
The bay is open Monday to Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday, no appointment. The best time for a coolant check is before the first freeze in October or November and again before the June heat. If you cannot remember the last coolant service, that is the answer: drive in to Mae Anne and have it tested today.

Can you just test my coolant without flushing it?
Yes. The freeze-point test is part of the multi-point check, and we only recommend the flush if the reading or the age says so.
Which coolant will you use?
The type your manufacturer specifies for your make and year, mixed to the ratio the manual gives. We do not top off one chemistry with another.
My car overheated on the Mount Rose Highway. Is a flush the fix?
Maybe not. Overheating can be a thermostat, fan, cap, pump or low coolant from a leak. We test and tell you what we see; read the overheating page for what else to check.
