The wipers leave a haze on the glass
A thin smear or haze across the windshield after each wipe usually comes from blades whose rubber edge has hardened or rounded, or from a film of road grime, wax or oil on the glass. New blades plus a properly cleaned windshield fix most cases.

This week
General guidance for this symptom. A warning light that is flashing or an overheating engine: stop driving and call.
Likely causes
- Hardened or worn blade rubber
Sun and heat age the rubber edge. Reno sees about 65 days a year at 90 F or more (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and a blade that bakes on the windshield all summer loses its sharp wiping edge. The Car Care Council suggests checking blades twice a year.
Windshield wiper blades - Road film and oil on the glass
Traffic spray carries oil and the treatments used on winter roads. It forms a film that blades smear rather than clear.
Windshield wiper blades - Wax or protectant on the windshield
Car wash wax and some interior cleaners leave a coating. Inside, vinyl dashboards off-gas a film on the inner glass that looks like outside haze.
Multi-point maintenance check - Washer fluid that leaves residue
Some fluids leave a soapy film, and plain water leaves mineral spots. A good fluid paired with good blades rinses clean.
Windshield wiper blades
Haze is different from streaks. Streaks are lines where the blade skips; haze is a fine, even smear that turns oncoming headlights into starbursts. In Northern Nevada it builds from dust, road treatments, smoke ash and the residue of cheap washer fluid. Night driving on US-395 or the Mount Rose Highway is where it becomes a real problem.

Is it inside or outside?
Wipe a small patch of the inside of the glass with a clean microfiber cloth. If the haze clears there, the film is on the inside, and no blade will touch it. Inside film is common on cars that sit in the sun, and smokers' cars and wildfire smoke days make it worse.
If the inside is clean, the haze is outside. Run the wipers on a wet windshield and look at the pattern. An even haze across the whole sweep is usually the glass. Bands or arcs that follow the blade usually point to the blade.
Clean the glass, then judge the blades
- Wash the outside with a glass cleaner and a fresh towel, working in both directions.
- Wipe each blade's rubber edge with a damp cloth. Black residue on the cloth is normal; nicks and hard spots are not.
- Run the washers. If the haze returns immediately, the blades are likely the cause.
- Lift each blade and run a fingertip along the edge. A rounded or cracked edge means replacement.
What happens in the bay
We look at your blades on every full-service oil change and top off the washer fluid. If the edges are worn, we show you and offer replacement wiper blades in the size your car takes. Fitting them is done when you pull in while you wait.
Glass that is pitted from years of sand on the highway can scatter light no matter what blade you use. Windshield replacement is outside what we do, and we will mention it if we see it. Our beam versus conventional blades comparison helps if you are choosing a type.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
How often should wiper blades be replaced here?
The Car Care Council suggests inspecting them twice a year. Sun and dust in Northern Nevada often mean replacing them about once a year.
Will rain repellent fix haze?
Repellents can help water bead, but they do not fix a worn blade and can chatter with some blade types.
Why is the haze worse at night?
Oncoming headlights scatter in the film. That is why haze matters more than it looks in daylight.
Do new blades need a break-in?
No. They should wipe clean right away on a clean windshield.
