A/C Service for SUVs
On a three-row SUV with rear air, the A/C system usually has two evaporators sharing one compressor and a larger refrigerant charge, and our A/C service checks the pressures, the front and rear vent temperatures and recharges to the label weight when the system is low. It is done while you wait at all four service centers, ideally before Reno's hot season of about 65 days a year at 90 F or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).

The question we hear most from SUV owners is some version of this: the front blows cold, but the kids in the third row are melting. In a dual-zone or rear-air SUV that symptom has a few usual causes, and a slightly low refrigerant charge is high on the list, because the rear evaporator is the farthest from the compressor and the first to suffer when the charge drops.

When it is due
Owner's manuals rarely list an A/C recharge interval, since the system is sealed and should hold its charge. What the manuals do list is a cabin filter interval and an inspection of belts and hoses. For a family SUV in Northern Nevada, a spring check is the sensible routine: it catches a slow leak before a road trip to Tahoe or a drive across the desert to the Bay Area.
Front and rear: what we check
The technician reads the high and low side pressures with the A/C on maximum, then measures the temperature at a front vent and, on rear-air models, a rear vent. A big gap between front and rear is useful information. If the system is low, it is recharged with the refrigerant on the underhood label to the specified weight, not by feel.
- Pressure readings at the service ports
- Front and rear vent temperatures
- Compressor and belt condition
- Condenser, hoses and fittings looked over
- Cabin filter on request, since it limits airflow
the visit
Pull in and stay with the SUV. The readings are shown to you before anything is added. If the system needs only a top-up, that is done in the bay. If the pattern points to a failed part or a large leak, which we do not repair, we tell you what we saw and why a recharge alone would not hold.
Why SUVs here work their A/C hard
Big glass areas, dark interiors and a lot of passengers add up to heavy heat load. The Minden station averages about 68 days a year at 90 F or hotter and Reno about 65 (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and the hottest stretch runs through July and August, right when families are driving to the lake. A weak rear air system is the first thing passengers notice on the climb up the Mount Rose Highway.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
Why is my rear A/C warm but the front is cold?
A low refrigerant charge often shows up in the rear first. A blocked cabin filter or a blend door can also cause it. The readings tell us which direction to point you.
Does my SUV hold more refrigerant than a car?
Rear-air models usually do. The exact amount is on the underhood label, and we charge to that weight.
Will you tell me before adding refrigerant?
Yes. You see the readings first and decide.
