Fuel System Cleaning for SUVs
For an SUV, fuel system cleaning makes the most sense when the engine hesitates, idles unevenly or has lost fuel economy, and short-trip family driving is one of the patterns that builds the deposits it targets. The service is done in the bay at all four of our service centers, and because most manufacturers publish no interval for it, we recommend it based on how the engine is running, not on mileage alone.

School drop-off, the grocery store, soccer practice, back home. An SUV that spends its week on two-mile trips around Damonte Ranch or Spanish Springs rarely gets fully warm, and an engine that runs cool and short leaves more carbon behind. Many of today's SUV engines are small turbocharged four-cylinders with direct injection, a combination that is efficient but tends to collect deposits on the intake side.

What the cleaning does
A concentrated cleaner is introduced through the fuel and intake systems with the engine running. It dissolves carbon and varnish on the injectors, in the intake and in the combustion chambers, and the loosened material burns off. It is a maintenance step, not a repair; it will not fix a failed injector or a mechanical problem.

Signs worth mentioning at the counter
A slight stumble when merging onto I-580, a lumpy idle at the light, or a fuel economy reading that has drifted down over a year are the usual reasons people ask. Tell the technician what you notice and when. If the pattern points away from deposits, toward a sensor or a vacuum leak for instance, you will hear that instead of a cleaning pitch.
Due by the book?
Very few SUV maintenance schedules list fuel system cleaning at all. The Car Care Council treats it as a condition-based item. Using a quality detergent gasoline helps prevent buildup in the first place, and a cleaning is the next step when symptoms appear.
What the schedules do list is the engine air filter and spark plugs, and both can mimic a deposit problem when they are overdue. That is why the technician looks at the air filter during every full-service oil change and asks about the last tune-up before suggesting a cleaning. If the simpler item is the likely cause, you hear about that one first.
Local driving that adds to deposits
Reno averages about 122 nights a year at or below freezing (NOAA 1991-2020 normals), and cold starts followed by short trips are exactly the conditions that leave deposits. The Reno service centers sit at about 4,400 and 4,900 feet (USGS 3DEP), so a slightly fouled engine is also short on power at altitude. Together those make winter the season when owners first notice a change.

Questions people ask
Still have a question? Call your service center or drive in; there is no appointment to make.
My SUV has a turbo four-cylinder. Does that matter?
Many of those engines use direct injection, which can build carbon on the intake valves. It is worth telling the technician which engine you have.
Will it improve my mileage?
If deposits were the cause of a drop, it can help. We do not promise a number.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Any of the four service centers can do it while you wait.
