Transmission fluid service for Old Northwest Reno drivers: Mae Anne Avenue, 11 minutes
From Rancho San Rafael and the streets around Keystone, our Mae Anne Avenue service center is about 11 minutes and 4.1 miles by North McCarran (OSRM routing, 10/15/26). Transmission fluid service there is done while you wait, on the interval your owner's manual sets for the way the car is actually driven.
Old Northwest Reno is a neighborhood of short trips. The mean commute in 89503 is 20.0 minutes and households average 1.67 vehicles (Census ACS 5-year 2024), and a lot of daily driving is Keystone, Seventh Street, McCarran and the run to campus or downtown. That kind of driving rarely gets a transmission hot on the highway, but it does pile up shifts, stops and starts, and manufacturers treat stop-and-go as severe service.
Stop-and-go is the hidden severe service
People picture towing when they hear severe service. Toyota's own guidance lists stop-and-go driving right next to towing and severe weather as reasons to change transmission fluid sooner. Every stop is a downshift, every start is the torque converter slipping and making heat, and an automatic in city traffic cycles through more of that in a week than a highway car does in a month. Older cars in the neighborhood, and there are plenty, have often had their fluid replaced less often than the schedule asked.
Summer adds heat on top. The Reno airport station averages about 65 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter (NOAA 1991-2020 normals).
How we decide what your car needs
We look up the interval for your model in the manual, both columns.
We check the fluid level and pull a sample for you to see.
If the history is unknown or the miles are high, we usually suggest a drain-and-fill rather than a full exchange.
If the fluid is clean and the car is well short of its interval, we tell you to leave it.
Getting there
Take North McCarran west from Keystone or the Rancho San Rafael side, then turn onto Mae Anne Avenue; the service center is at 6100, on the way to Robb Drive. From the south end of the neighborhood near the river, West McCarran north gets you to the same place. Longley Lane in south Reno is about 15 minutes if your day is headed that way.
A note on CVTs and older automatics
Compact cars in this neighborhood often use a CVT, which needs the exact CVT fluid its maker names. Older four-speed automatics are simpler but often have no service record at all. Either way, we name the fluid on the invoice. If a sample shows clutch material or metal, we will tell you a fluid service is unlikely to fix the symptom; we do not repair transmission internals.

Mae Anne Avenue is open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 and Saturday 8 to 4, closed Sunday; (775) 787-1000. No appointment.

What a customer said
Reno Northwest
Excellent facility!First visit a day ago. Shop Manager Tim welcomed me, and naturally started a friendly conversation (about cars), then he proceeded to personally service my car (oil change),he worked fast, but not in a hurry, changed the oil, greased the joints, checked everything around the engine, also detected a low transmission fluid level, which he corrected. Saying it simply:Tim is of a kind of professional they don't make any more! I will be back!

Do I need transmission service if I only drive around town?
Possibly sooner, not later. City stop-and-go is on the severe-service list in many manuals.
How long does it take?
It is done while you wait, often during an oil change.
What color should the fluid be?
Red or amber and nearly clear. Our fluid color guide explains the rest.
